Bagel lovers rejoice!

Actually, the St. Urbain enterprise is what established Montreal-style bagels as a Toronto yuppie-nosh fave in the 90s--sort of like the Future Bakery of its realm...

The Montreal Bagel House is highly reccomended, absolutely amazing. I came home with half-a-dozen sesame seed bagels and threatened death if any of my housemates dared to steal any. I can see epic treks up to Leaside for bagels and gelato becoming a regular experience.

Hollywood gelato? Sorry Little Italy, but Hollywood gelato is top notch. Lineups often out the door any night of the week in the summer. The cappucino is also one of the best Ive had in the city.

Id reccomend anyone to do a little food shopping in Leaside.

After heading out to Bayview to try this place and Hollywood Gelato (probably as good as La Paloma, but La Paloma has more flavours), I found another Montreal Bagel House, on Avenue Road (1722 Avenue Road, at Fairlawn). A lot closer to me, and I expect to be making a stop there every now and then on my way home from work.

I stopped in at the Avenue Road location on my way home, splurging by taking the 142 (a premium express route), with a spare token I had on me. The 142 is a great bus route, not crowded, and not too slow, surprisingly enough. It takes you by many of the great projects - Opera House, CCBR, MaRS, ROM, and through a variety of districts.

No sesame seed bagels left, so went with poppy seeds - but the poppy seeds actually stick propertly. And the bagels - Mmmmmm.

Some of you have I think heard my stories about Bagel Stop, so I'll spare you the details about the horrendous service. (To this day I can't pass by any Bagel Stop without chuckling.) I've grown up with Toronto bagels and personally find Bagel Stop bagels nothing special.

I grew up on Abel's bagels (later Lender's Bagels) which are soft but toast well and are addictive if you like soft bagels. To me, they are to Montreal bagels what Wonder bread is to a good French loaf.

I love a good Montreal bagel, though. And gelato too? Say no more. I see an UrbanTO brunch meet in the works...

I grew up eating Montreal-style bagels. You should all know that they are addictive. If you are prone to such a problem, think twice.

Smoked meat is another seriously addictive substance. I think I've eaten at least one cow's worth of the stuff at Schwartz's.

Now you tell me...

As a side note, regarding poppy seed bagels - having too many can actually make you fail a drug test.

Elaine: Huh. (pause) Oh my god.
Helen: What?
Elaine: A poppy seed! It must have been in the chicken. Oh, I'm dead. I'm going to the doctor's in a half an hour.
Helen: Why?
Elaine: It's a long story.
Helen: Just a second, I have to go to the bathroom.
Elaine: What are you gonna do in there?
Helen: What am I gonna do in the bathroom?
Elaine: You gotta do me a favor.
Helen: Elaine, I really--
Elaine: Hold on a second. Mrs. Seinfeld, I need your sample.
Helen: You want my urine?
Elaine: I need a clean urine sample from a woman.
Helen: I don't know.
Elaine: Oh please, Mrs. Seinfeld, please?
Helen: Well, what am I gonna do it in?
Elaine: Well, one of those glasses.
Helen: Jerry's glasses?
Elaine: Yeah, he won't mind. C'mon, you're his mom.
Helen, Oh, I could uh-- Should I use a coffee cup?
Elaine: Yeah, a coffee cup's fine.
Helen: Or maybe a juice glass.
Elaine: Yes, fine, fine, a juice glass is perfect.
Helen: This one is kind of scratched.
Elaine: It doesn't matter.
Helen: Howbout A milk glass.
Elaine: A milk glass, a juice glass, any glass, just pick a glass.
Helen: Jerry doesn't wash these very well.
Elaine: Mrs. Seinfeld, pick a glass! Pick a glass, Mrs. Seinfeld!

My good neighbour, a churchgoing woman, speaks highly of St.John's Bakery ( just down the street from us at 155 Broadview ) for bread. I haven't tried it yet.

If you go between 8 am and 10 am on Friday it is fresh from the oven. They have a strong sense of community and social responsibility.

... their sourdough bread is nice, I picked up a loaf this morning. They will be opening a shop there soon.

Big Carrot usually has St. John's products - I agree, they are quite nice. But not as nice as my wife's homemade bread which is the usual fare at our place.
