Avenue Road Oldies

AMAZING!

I've always thought these are the nicest of old buildings, very classy and old-world looking.

If they ever try to tear these types of apartments down in my lifetime, I'll chain myself to them.

Beautiful photo thread... thanks!

I really like this residential area, I used to really enjoy running up South Hill more than anywhere else in Toronto. From what I remember, I think right beside Lytton Park park on alexandra blvd. is another very picturesque residential spot in Toronto near Yonge.

^ Agreed, Avenue Road north of Eglinton has a concentration of atttractive old 4-plexes which I don't think exists elsewhere in Toronto, at least in such numbers. Those apartments are large!

Yeah, I knew a guy who was such a Montreal fetishist that he insisted on living on that stretch of Lonsdale Ave. in nearby Forest Hill village that looks like Shrebrooke in NDG.

To ease my way into la belle province, I chose Westmount, which is very North Toronto-like.

To ease my way into the 16th century, I'd move into that Tudor manor house shown in Andrew's second picture.

It's good to be king.

I took a stroll up Avenue the other day to check out these handsome structures in person (I've been up and down this stretch dozens of times, but always whizzing by in a vehicle). They truly are imposing. Though I have to say, the variety store on the corner of the building in Andrew's third photo has to be one of the shabbiest, most dreary convenience stores I've ever set foot inside in this city (perhaps second only to the one that used to be at the base of the Bay-Charles tower). Certainly not befitting such a grand, old building.

There is something about some of the Avenue Road apartments here

to the east, Bayview Village (south of Eglinton) is another area that has this sort of mix of early 20th century apartments and large detached homes. Some great remnants around the old City of Toronto borders...

The Garden Court Apartments on Bayview are designated under the Ontario Heritage act. http://www.hpd.mcl.gov.on.ca/scripts/hpdsearch/english/popupSearch.asp?pid=967
The apartments across from Mount Pleasant Cemetery are in danger of redevelopment.http://www.lpoa.ca/talbot.html
(but Bayview Village is a shopping centre & subdivision north-east of Bayview and Sheppard)

Great stretch of buildings on Eglinton, just east of Bathurst:
