660 Richmond Street W

I just felt like I needed to chime in since the topics hit a little close to home.

It's so terrible we could lose a really great safe space for artists and the creatives that make this city so great for... a preparatory, homophobic church.

It would be one thing if it was a condo, as at least some intensification would make sense, even though it'd still suck for those using the space now. In that case replacement units could be allocated and more people could be housed.

These types of 'churches' being allowed into the city with such a history of bigotry and pedophilia makes me sick and feel unsafe. I already have anxiety holding my partner's hand in public, but knowing they are going to be out there indoctrinating people into their sick system of hate and villainy makes me feel so hurt and scared. I just want to live without fear, but actively allowing this type of rhetoric is what creates more victims of hate crimes down the line.

It's so demoralizing that this is legal and allowed. This wouldn't just be another church down the block; we have many great loving churches in this city, but this 'church' could inflict serious damage to the youth in the community just trying to feel okay with themselves.

Though C3’s website and social media has been filled with detail about their supposed purchase of the Geary location and their plans for it, the Rehearsal Factory’s owners, Chris Skinner and Evon Skinner, denied that a sale has closed. But they have confirmed the closure of another downtown location at Richmond and Bathurst.

“Due to COVID lockdowns, the Rehearsal Factory location at 660 Richmond Street West will be closing its doors effective July 31st, 2021,” they wrote in a statement to NOW. “All tenants have been offered an opportunity to relocate to Front Street, Geary Avenue and other locations. The Geary Avenue location has not been sold. If and when it does sell, we will lease it back for as long as possible.”

The owners clarified that they own all the buildings they operate out of except the location on Front, which they already sold two and a half years ago. They’ve since been leasing it back.

Exclaim! looked into listings on realtor.ca and found that numerous other locations are currently on the market for sale: 1611 Finfar Crescent in Mississauga, 827 Gordon Street in Oshawa, 160 Islington Avenue in Etobicoke, and 747 King Street East in Hamilton.

With the sale of the Geary site to the C3s posted yesterday, if anyone is wondering what's going on with this (former) Rehearsal Factory, there are construction permits posted on 660 Richmond suggesting its being converted to a "Television Studio".

Maybe that's a euphemism for "porn palace".
