2026 Toronto Mayoral Race

Fear that no extreme candidate would win from that point forward.
Ironically, the absence of ranked balloting might have "saved" Olivia Chow ("extreme" due to her being NDP) in the byelection, if one assumes that the anti-Olivias would have ranked their way to Bailao.

I think those who oppose more representative electoral systems think they can accurately game the outcomes. Ford thought he would be able to cement a right wing ally by splitting the left and the opposite happened. Just give us ranked balloting, so we don't have to have this weird backroom nonsense before the election.

And he also thought he'd nuke the left when it cut Council in half in '18--instead, the left held its own and even reinforced itself (the Mammo vs Perruzza race being a key example)

Anthonly Furey's out too. As much as I dislike Furey, him dropping out of the mayoral race effective leaves Brad Bradford - who must be stopped at all costs - as the only primary challenger to Olivia Chow. Very concerned about Chow's re-election chances because of this. 😭

Olivia Chow or Brad Bradford doesn't matter when Doug Ford is in control.

It matters because it is Chow who has been in control while letting mentally ill junkies destroy our city and spending millions on renaming Dundas square for no reason with no public consultation. She must be voted out.

Damn I can't wait to read your spicy takes about Ford's governance and misspending over the past nearly 8 years in the Doug Ford's Ontario threa--

Dundas was renamed under Tory. It was under Chow that the plan was scaled back and it was only the Square renamed.

But I agree, we can't let conservatives be allowed to destroy our city with their addiction to lies and hate.

You can deflect all you want but this thread is about the mayor race and you cannot deny the state of the city has gotten worse under her tenure despite her raising taxes over and over. Vote her out.

Whatever helps you sleep better at night bro.

There is absolutely no question the City has gotten better under her tenure as mayor.

Lets review:

Fewer encampments
More TTC service.
More Library Hours
More priority for public transit on Bathurst, Dufferin and Dundas..
Expanded School Lunch programs
Fare capping on TTC beginning in September
Violent Crime and Car theft down significantly.
Tackling the long standing need to replace and modernize Toronto's streetlights

For a start.

Objectively and provably better than 3 years ago.

Remember, informed opinions follow the evidence.

This sort of extreme partisanship is just not helpful in any context. No mainstream political group in Canada is "addicted to lies and hate". We will have a better functioning political system and broader society if we can all step back and accept that.

The joke I typically make is that "the streetcars run on time" when I wait less than a minute for one, but it's true and feels true on the ground that general TTC service under Chow has felt miles ahead of what Tory was giving us.
