2025 44th Ontario general election (Feb 27, 2025)

Yes, very disappointing. The Green Party's provincial popular vote also dropped by a percent compared to 2022. I wonder if it's time for Mike Schreiner to move on? He's been leader since 2009.

I don't know. I'm not a partisan. But I have to say, if you've met Mike, I think he leaves a good impression. He comes off as level-headed, pragmatic, honest...........I really don't hear anyone say anything bad about him.

The challenge of breaking through isn't just a better leader......arguably he was the most adept in the debates........at worst he was competitive.

He's certainly not a light-the-room-on-fire speaker ............he'd the be the first to say so. But does that matter if you can't afford TV Ads......and the media gives you after-thought level exposure?

Not sure who the Liberals campaign manager was, but they need to fire them into the sun. Just totally out of place in a 2025 world. Topics that have been dominating conversations last few fears : Housing affordability...traffic congestion...inflation....jobs. Liberals: "Family Doctors!"

Concerns over declining Health Care has been a consistent issue that people have been complaining about for the last decade. This is especially true regarding the significant wait list for Family Doctors. As far as big ticket issues to raise issue with, the liberals could've chosen FAR worse. The bigger issue I have was simply how realistic their proposal was. Right now the biggest issue with increasing the number of Family Doctors is how insanely whiny Med Schools have been regarding increasing capacity/enrollment. Ford tried to entice more doctors into the field, and all of the med schools threw a fit.

I wonder if this will force the NDP and OLP to consider a merge.

With a seatless OLP leader and vote splitting on the left something has got to give.
Why? The OLP improved their share of the popular vote substantially, it was just inefficient. In 4 years they will be in a very strong position to defeat the PCs.

I'm not even convinced that Bonnie should resign. She may need to stand in a byelection to get in to the Legislature. I think the PCs just orchestrated a perfect confluence of factors to secure a win now, and got very lucky besides.

What evidence do you have to support this? Please bring citations. Medical school tuition is deregulated, I don't see too many school objecting to more medical students in that context and don't recall any objections to more chairs, but I will stand to be corrected.

Also York has been clamouring for a medical school forever and a day. The Ford government only just gave that the greenlight.

****

Ford also chose to nix practice-ready assessment which Wynne had just started (expedited recognition of foreign credentials). It was cut in his first year in power.

His government has since restarted the program, however as at this year it will only be ramped up to 200 spots per year, and available only for those will to practice in remote areas.

BC will handle roughly 100 spots per year this year, with 1/3 of Ontario's population. So we should certainly be able to muster 300 per year w/o difficulty.

When I saw the ads that 2.5 million (out of 16 million) Ontarians do not have a family doctor, my immediate thought was, 84% of us have a family doctor. That’s doesn’t sound so bad - if 84% of Ontarians had affordable housing we’d be over the moon. Considering I’ve always had a family doctor and see them perhaps three times a year, my immediate thought was that was an odd hill to die on.

Agree that declining healthcare in Ontario should be a concern, but Ontarians have shown its not the most important issue for them considering how much they keep voting for Ford. Like @Admiraz Beez mentioned, it was a weird hill to die on.

The family doctor issue is important, but for the election, they should have hammered Ford on the continuous waste of public money, including the cost of the election. IMHO.

The PCPO are perceived as being good with money. They are not

I exercised my franchise by refusing to exercise my franchise.
Also people stopping to take selfies and crap.
I was going to react surprised by when people taking pictures of their food all bets are off. There were signs in my polling place prohibiting cameras but I guess here we are. It's indirectly illegal under the Ontario Elections Act.

I wonder if this will force the NDP and OLP to consider a merge.
I think that comment comes up after every election in Canada when one of them doesn't win.
