2020 Olympics and the DRL

How is it that Bob and Doug Mackenzie, er Rob and Doug "just visiting" Ford, can take it upon themselves to decide on such a matter?
The City of Toronto Act. It gave us a strong mayor system. I doubt it would have been passed if anyone ever thought that anyone as incompetent as Rob Ford would be elected mayor.

The City of Toronto Act. It gave us a strong mayor system.

It gives us a stronger mayor system, but a true strong mayor system is a different kettle of fish altogether. And be thankful, because you wouldn't want to see Toronto with one of those.

It's laziness on the part of the media to imply that Ford has officially "killed" a bid by virtue of official mayoral prerogative. He came out opposed, and in light of the de facto level of influence he has over council on the whole and over the executive committee in particular, it would be virtually impossible in practical terms to see a bid initiative proceed through the machinery of city government (were there a clamour on any corner of council at all to bid for such a thing, which we have seen no evidence of).

But virtually impossible is not the same thing as a formal veto. For the man on the street, it's mostly an academic distinction, but it irks me, because it implies Ford has a level of legal authority that he doesn't.

Still ... if the Executive is opposed to it, they'll stonewall it ... and the bid wouldn't stand a chance. It's an effective veto.

Just saw on the news today...the Ford brothers does not have any plans to participate in the bid for the 2020 Olympics...there goes the DRL!
