1 Unique Toronto Taxicab Colour?

Does anyone know of any other city that has all their taxis under one company, and all their taxis with the same color, other than NY?

New York has many cab companies.

Two-thirds of cabs are exclusively leased; one-third are owner-driven
• In 2003, 3,590 taxicabs (29%) were driven by the medallion owner. Thirty-nine
percent of these cabs were also leased for a second shift to other driver(s).
• 2,050 cabs (17%) were operated by 16 TLC-recognized fleets; 76% of these cabs
were operated on an “unspecified driver†basis, meaning they could be leased by
the shift or long-term.
• 5,350 cabs (44%) were operated by 53 TLC-registered “agents.†Of these, 25%
were operated on an “unspecified driver†basis and 75% through long-term
leases.
• 1,400 cabs (11%) were leased by owners who were not registered as agents.
Twenty-six agents and fleets operate 100 or more cabs
• 26 agents or fleets operate 100 or more taxicabs and together operate a total of
5,730 cabs.
• The largest fleets are Team Systems Corp., which operates 328 taxicabs, and
Ronart Leasing Corp., which operates 272 cabs.
• The largest agents are All Taxi Management Inc. (which operates 608 cabs), S&R
Medallion Corp. (402 cabs), Transit Systems Ltd. (401 cabs), Woodside
Management Inc. (341 cabs), Queens Medallion Leasing Inc. (287 cabs), Mystic
Leasing Service Corp. (280 cabs) and Yellow Cab SLS Jet Management (244
cabs).
• Most fleets and agents are located in Queens (primarily Long Island City), with
some in Manhattan and Brooklyn and a few in the Bronx.

Aren't taxis in London England all one colour and also a special type of car.

Hong Kong taxis come in three colours. Red taxis operate in urban areas (but can travel anywhere in Hong Kong), while green taxis and blue taxis operate in suburban areas only (green: New Territories, blue: Lantau Island). Each type of taxi charges differently... you can go farther for less in a suburban taxi.

No, we've got different companies, different colors, and different makes. The most popular is the black LTI cab, but I've seen it in gray, black, etc. Also, there are some Peugeots that are like tall station wagons cruising around as cabs too.

I don't like the idea of one unique taxicab colour, because I like the look of Beck (orange/green), Diamond(orange/black) and Royal(blue white) and wouldn't want them to lose their image.

I have been noticing more and more unpainted taxicabs (now even some Diamond ones don't have their paint!) and I don't like it because a lot of them look like unmarked police cars.

My suggestion is two make all cabs have:
- a two-tone colour scheme, where the cab company is free to choose the colours (colours start and end at the same place for all companies, two tones have to be dissimilar)
- a uniform top light fixture, where top line says TAXI, second and third lines have company and phone number

Maybe put giant floodlights on the top of each one, so all we have to do is find the nearest giant beam of light? :)

Then we would have birds flying into cabs.

I never thought of that! Hahaha.

I like to two-tone rule though.

not a bad idea MetroMan1000.. and for those who said they like the bright orange colour of Beck taxis, how about making that the official Toronto Taxi colour? .. the two tone idea is a good one too...

my vote is for "copter cabs"!!!

Copter taxis to boost tourism
Our Correspondent

Kangra, May 28
The Himachal Pradesh Transport and Tourism Minister, Mr G.S. Bali, yesterday said, in a press conference at Dharamsala on Friday, the Pathankot airport would soon be opened to civil aviation and helicopter taxi services would be launched within six months in the state to boost tourism.

He said to boost tourism work on the Shimla-Jakhoo ropeway would start from May 31, after inviting the tenders. The process for the construction of the ropeway between Dharamsala and McLeodganj would also start soon. The state government would purchase a helicopter within two months to boost tourism.

Everyone: This is one topic I want to add my two cents to. I am here in Midtown Manhattan,NYC posting this-I recall on my Toronto trips that I made between 1979-1990 I remember that Toronto's police cars back then looked quite a bit like a taxi with the yellow paint-I do fully understand the new colors that they received. On a Summer 1988 trip that I made with some friends,we stopped at a garage that repaired taxis and some Metro PD cars. One of the repairmen told us that because of some toxic chemical in the yellow paint used for TO's police cars that the paint was making painters sick-hence the new paint and colors. I also recall that there was a cab company with TO cabs that were medium blue with a white side stripe-quite similar ironically to NYC Police cars of the Late 80s time. I think the orange and teal or turquoise would be good stand-out colors for Toronto's medallion cab fleet. Long Island Mike

Branding a city is definitely important in todays global economy. You have to differentiate yourself, and a taxicab look is part of that packaging.

The orange and green Beck taxis say Toronto to me, but I'm very partial to the TTC red, silver, and even that beige they used to use in combination. It's memorable, unique, and looks slick.

I saw a pic of old TTC streetcars in the tri-colour in front of Metropolis. They looked terrific. A uniformity between TTC and taxis may be desirable. You'd see a see of TTC red, silver, and beige. It would make a strong first impression for any tourist.

As a Brit-born-Canuck I am always pleased to see the ever consistently appearing London black taxi (sometimes purple). The London government has long understood that along with the double-decker bus, the black cab is part of London's image and history.

The Austin FX4, see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_FX4 was produced from 1958 to 1997, setting the classic London cab look. The cars made today still have this look www.manganese.com/

There's a move a foot to sell the new London Cabs in North America, with left-hand drive of course, see details at www.londontaxisna.com/index02.htm

I think the cities with set looks and/or colours for their taxi fleets see their city as a brand to be protected and promoted. On the otherhand, IMO, cities that don't give a darn what their taxis look like don't promote themselves well. Not always the case of course, but I'd say London, New York, Hong Kong, etc. better understand the brand of their city than Toronto.
