Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

Not really? Out of the 46 Porter departures from YTZ tomorrow morning, 17 of them are to YUL, YOW, or YQB, equalling about 36%. While that number sounds significant, there is also every reason to believe that Porter and AC will increase the number of transborder flights now that US pre-clearance...

    Toronto 30 Huntley Street | 198.1m | 60s | Osmington Gerofsky | Diamond Schmitt

Were they planning to move into the now delayed Union Park?

So what's the point in doing the application if they don't intend to build it? Are they hoping to get the rezoning so it can be sold for it's development potential with the zoning already approved?

We should not be constructing 50 story towers with the assumption that they will only ever be occupied by students. That's what student housing is for.

I hope the West Waterfront Streetcar finally gets built one day

Had they planned to build a Streetcar on Bremner?

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

Four years isn’t too bad of a timeline considering it was originally poised to be eight. Not to mention that construction (shovels in ground) starting in 4 years means a lot needs to happen between now and then. Design, consultations, studies, procurements, contracts, etc. Four years is...

    Toronto Union Station Revitalization | ?m | ?s | City of Toronto | NORR

This might be one of the worst things I've ever seen. This is almost worse than if Union had been demolished.

Beautiful, amazing, unique -- need this so badly.

"Combined with a $1.3-billion price estimate, this option faces severe, (dare I say) uphill battles for acceptance." So only ~$2B to dig a new platform underneath Union? Honestly not bad if we're already spending 40x that on the whole project

There is space to expand Union and create adjacent platforms for ALTO if we really had the ambition to do so. The Yonge Street off-ramp of the Gardiner was planned for demolition; there is space for platforms there. If they decide to go through with the Union Park development, there is space for...

    Toronto Union Station Revitalization | ?m | ?s | City of Toronto | NORR

YTZ is successful because its location makes it more convenient than YYZ for a lot of people, specifically business travellers. ALTO's station, being in Summerhill, is inconvenient compared to the alternative of the Union Station transit hub for nearly everyone.

This makes zero sense...an airline that doesn't fly to a train station has garnered a loyal following? The entire benefit of the train service is to have direct downtown-to-downtown connections. Having to end up in the suburbs of Toronto, even Midtown or Don Mills, is a complete waste of time...

While I love the design rationale, the execution sucks.

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

That does seem like a good idea, to be honest. I think that having double-decker trains would allow for increased capacity and shorter trains; it's a win-win. Dwell times might be a bit longer, but the distances between stations are far enough I can't imagine it would make a huge difference.

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

Honestly, that's not a terrible idea. Having VIA operate out of a future East Harbour or Spadina station could create some space. I also wonder if an expansion could be constructed into the future Union Park (current Metro Toronto Convention Centre) site. It's directly adjacent to Union and...

    Toronto Union Station Revitalization | ?m | ?s | City of Toronto | NORR

Hmm, I never considered that but that would be a great way to link both Pearson and Union. I wonder what the time cost would be with taking that route. Oh myyy, what I wouldn't give to see this become a reality. It really would be a great form of promotion for people stuck in traffic along the...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

The only space available to the east would be on the south side of the rail corridor adjacent to the Yonge off-ramp. I know they had plans to remove that off-ramp, so if that's still happening it could be a good place to build the ALTO platform while still linking to Union

It's unfortunate, but I guess we can't win em all. I wonder how much of a difference there is irl.

    Toronto Union Station Revitalization | ?m | ?s | City of Toronto | NORR

As far as I'm concerned, ALTO needs to go to Union; stopping it short would be a generational fumble. If running it surface level isn't an option, then it should be tunnelled under Union or a new ALTO platofrm should be constructed where the Yonge off ramp currently is (if they still plan to...
