Why is this a thing? Another Middle-East skyscraper engulfed in flames!

I'm certainly no expert either, but I think most of these UAE tower fires are mainly limited to the exterior cladding material (which makes them look more horrific than they actually are). Having lived in the region, many of the less "landmark" towers use quite low quality China-sourced...

    The Coming Disruption of Transport

Perhaps that says more about your friend groups than a trend over all. I personally hate taking Ubers, mostly because I hate their business model, but also because there other benefits to having and operating your own vehicle, much like there are benefits to owning your home over renting one. I...

    Pickering Airport (Transport Canada/GTAA, Proposed)

No, I am saying that people would (and do) drive to Buffalo to fly to US destinations opposed to driving to Pearson through GTA traffic.

    Pickering Airport (Transport Canada/GTAA, Proposed)

A major issue with Hamilton is it's proximity to Buffalo and the cheap US domestic flights available there. Durham doesn't have the same problem.

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

Dreaming here, but can we have a more aggressive chime like in Asia?

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

This has been happening at the three malls with iXpress service for ages. I used to drive to Conestoga Mall to take the bus back to UW to save on parking.

OAA Letter to the Government re: recommended Design Exclusion changes to the Planning Act

I agree this takes up time and money for developers. I work as a planning consultant, I see the back and forth all the time. But I also see terrible building materials everywhere and letting this small amount of control municipalities have over the build quality is not something I think we...

    Toronto West Block Est. 1928, The LakeShore, and The LakeFront | 130.75m | 41s | Choice Properties | a—A

The problem is renderings are deceiving and the contracts give themselves a ton of leeway to change designs. This is going to look like absolute hell in five years when the grime starts running down under the windows.

Roads: Gardiner Expressway catch-all, incl. Hybrid Design (2015-onwards)

One only needs to look as far as Highway 7 between Leslie and Birchmount to see what a surface level traffic sewer (cough, "complete street") looks like. It neither moves traffic well nor is an enjoyable place to walk (though it is much better than the current Lakeshore config)

    The High Rise Suburb

In North America, perhaps. BC's lower mainland has plenty of suburban condos. GTA suburbs are comparably DENSE.

    Toronto MEC Queen Street (Mountain Equipment Coop) | 21.03m | 3s | Parallax | Sweeny &Co

Woof. The North York location is definitely a (small) step above this mess.

    micro condos

370 sq.ft for $506,000 at 543 Richmond. North facing with a deep walled balcony - sure to be a bright unit.

    Downtown Markham

Yep. They really need to install the signals, but my guess is they are waiting for the rapidway to be extended east.

    Downtown Markham

I honestly hate Markham's 4 lane stop sign controlled intersections, and with the size of the road as it is right now, this area would function better with a small roundabout to facilitate easy access into Nexus from the south.

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

That will literally never happen. We tried that in the 1950s to 1970s.

    Downtown Markham

That's disappointing. The extra 770 metre walking distance from Enterprise and the rail bridge to the station is a pretty significant impediment to having DT Markham residents walk to the station.

    Laundry In Apartment Blocks

I've used them in the Middle East and they take at least 2.5-3 hours to dry...waste of time and energy.

    Laundry In Apartment Blocks

River City has combo washer/dryers (one machine, ventless drying that takes forever). The stacked units are much better in comparison. Part of the reason why I walked away from a rental in RC2 was the washer/dryer (and the lack of space to hang dry things.

    Laundry In Apartment Blocks

Just a guess... it's easier and cheaper to maintain a central laundry room than it is to maintain individual washer/dryers in each apartment unit. In condos, that's the responsibility of the unit owner, not the single landlord in these tower blocks. The new TCHC building in Regent Park (NW...

    Toronto Pearson International Airport

I've been bussed to/from Lufthansa flights in Frankfurt and Turkish Airlines flights at Istanbul Ataturk. It's not ideal but it's really not the end of the world and so much better than waiting for a gate to open.
