GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

The only VIA service to West Harbour is operated by Amtrak. If WH had space for a high platform then that would be a value add, but making passengers from London go to Oakville and then schlep back to get to Burlington and Hamilton makes little sense to me.

Sheppard Line 4 Subway Extension (Proposed)

TYSSE - didn’t Byford fire some guys on that right after he took over? And there was a lawsuit about who would pay overruns? Ain’t no project without drama, it seems

TTC Fleet Procurement Strategy - 2022

One of my alternative history scenarios is the Dash 8s being built in Thunder Bay and the rail plant being at Downsview, rolling cars directly out onto the GTA’s metro and heavy rail networks. Some Dashes would have been ferried down to Toronto but unlike rail cars it’s harder for a tagger to...

    Ottawa Transit Developments

Catching up on this threads and chuckling at some of the posts from August asking why Ottawa didn’t go with a high floor LRT like Calgary did - it seems some folks here joined to late to know that the City of Ottawa and Siemens (who made Calgary’s high floor stock and would have been a strong...

    Quebec-Windsor Corridor

To my mind HFR (on the existing VIA service areas) would be more of a Tory friendly policy, targeted as a rural to urban service to please conservative ridings/voters in central Ontario and the Montreal hinterland. It could be delivered for a relatively modest sum (depending on how closely CN...

    VIA Rail

VIA’s own tracks (Brockville-Ottawa-Coteau, Chatham-Windsor) are ex-CN, right? Is it reasonable to assume their detection technology has not been changed out since? There were those crossing issues in Ottawa a few years back but I don’t remember what root cause was assigned to those

    VIA Rail

I guess the part I’m stuck on is the light part. Are Chargers and Venture cars really that much lighter than LRCs? Not nitpicking, just figured FRA Tier I equipment would still be in a certain weight class no matter how sharp the designing pencil. Obviously the only safe crossing is one where...

hard not to see some of the jonesing for strong mayor action as merely wanting to extend Ford bullying to the municipal level. While I don’t have much time for the current makeup of council, the debates are at least public. I dread the advent of a council as toothless to question a bullying...

Aside from the legalities and differences in city/mayoral powers between those situations and that the City of Toronto doesn’t even own the airport, it doesn’t look like Chow’s priority right now given that the door has been opened to continuance to 2045, and it doesn’t seem likely that the...

I thought I remembered that AC floated the idea of operating jets themselves during a mayoral election campaign, which seemed to be a stir the pot thing rather than serious, but I can’t remember when or find a cite. Does that ring a bell for anyone else?

My recollection is that there was at least scepticism by the no-jets crowd about the C-Series noise numbers given that Porter were shopping that idea before first flight. In any case, if you google “A220 noise” it seems their geared turbofans make a distinctive noise...

As I said in one of the other threads, lots of people sue lots of people and issuance of suit does not make the action valid or worth conceding in advance. I am not a lawyer, still less a transport lawyer, but I struggle to see what a “right to operate a particular type of aircraft” would look...

    Montréal Transit Developments

There was also the problem that none of the stations between STC and Kennedy were accessible so there was no intention to run the service past 2025 anyway, so the incident merely brought that forward

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Kill it? Is there a different agency with the same name that people grumble about the pace of progress on the Stouffville line and between Georgetown and Kitchener?

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

if we are really discussing seizing the means of railroading and bringing CP and CN as entire corporate entities into national ownership we have wandered far into crayon land. At the same time let‘s not go the other way and assume that the only regulatory options open to the Feds are let...

I would suspect that if any discussions have been held between Nieuport and Ports Toronto on an option for extension in the event of a tripartite extension, that they have been kept very quiet. It would presumably be in PT’s interest to have Nieuport backing their lobbying to get an extension...

    Ontario Northland/Northern Ontario Transportation

presumably there is intense pressure from the Premier’s Office to get at least test runs going in 2025 if Doug wants to go to the polls again while the opposition remains weak. But ONTC can’t test trains they don’t have, and haven’t been through acceptance and crew training. One wonders if we...

I think it’s a bit premature to decide the likely trend for YTZ passenger numbers until preclearance is operational. If numbers are still flat or only marginally up when that is no longer a Pearson differentiator, that’s not a good sign for long run demand.

It would be good if people could take the assurances provided by government agencies as being honest, no? And even they have not been in the past, that they could start?
