    VIA Rail

Re the long distance locomotive replacement. I posted the Merx announcement on railroad.net and it raised a suggestion I hadn’t contemplated - without sight of specifications and thus VIA priorities, couldn’t VIA simply order Tier 4 freight units, and have HEP provided by generators on baggage...

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

If people are going to be rehashing Eglinton subway retrofit arguments again, I am throwing in for a Lawrence LRT instead again

TTC: Scarborough Busway Construction (portion of the former Scarborough RT route)

The decision not to proceed with a Lawrence East SmartTrack station notwithstanding Centennial gives a good sense of what that evidence, if tested, would show?

    General railway discussions

I always take mild climate range figures with a pinch of salt. I often wonder if Toronto needs two different battery chemistries so power packs get swapped out in Spring and Fall, like winter tires :)

    General railway discussions

I have a feeling the MPI brand is dead, so any new locos reverting to GE, such as their P47AC proposal https://vergarastudio.com/index.php/projects/ge-p47ac-passenger-locomotive.html Meanwhile electrek reports on a UK trial of a Hitachi battery intercity trainset. Mind you, the distances...

    General railway discussions

Wouldn’t that be reasonably similar to the Quebec/Labrador iron ore operations?

    VIA Rail

Agreed, but VIA had taken steps in acquiring Ventures which should have significantly insulated them compared to new model stock e.g. LRC's rollout. It was certainly one of the reasons that I thought it made sense to go with them rather than try and engineer a solution with more made-in-Canada...

Dan, is Sandite application a thing in Canada? Might be a way to work around the lack of locomotive sanders.

    VIA Rail

VIA has by no means retired their legacy fleet. VIA is currently running 13 out of 28 corridor equipment rotations as Venture, 11 as LRC, 4 as HEP. 84 and 87 will be operated with four LRC coaches between the locomotives.

TTC: Electric and alternative fuel buses

We occasionally have discussion about “Metrolinx taking over TTC” but maybe their intervention is needed at other GTA municipalities is needed instead to not only create but push through change. Instead of providing bulk ordering to municipalities, they could provide a capacity agreement to them...

    Quebec-Windsor Corridor

I agree - but because they managed to increase frequency rather than a quantum leap in speed. The thing most in the way of it really breaking out is figuring out how to push more trains east of Alexandria, either via the CP route or paying CN for improvements at Coteau. As for Montreal-Quebec...

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

According to a post on Groups.io, there is news from the Kitchener line At 0300 this morning (Sunday November 3, 2024), new controlled locations Shantz (56.3) and Woolwich (57.9) were officially commissioned into service on the Guelph Sub during a busy weekend track closure. The subdivision now...

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

To be fair - the TTC or City aren’t the entity putting on this event. TTC and GO Transit should be putting on information targeted at their customers who are not attending but may be concerned about availability of service on their local routes. The event promoter is the one who should be...

    Ontario Northland/Northern Ontario Transportation

You know, I thought about mentioning the six axle option but I thought, no, be nice to the rail fans they get so annoyed by the SD70s in Chicago but yoooooou had to go there :)

That’s the 2 x QSK60 with no HEP engine, compared to the 4,000+1,000hp of the MP40 Tier 3. The thing is, MP40/54s are heavy by passenger locomotive standards - about 130 tonnes. That means more track forces, more wear and tear.

    Quebec-Windsor Corridor

It’s not like we’re choosing between doctors and trains. Doctors are a provincial responsibility, shortages are all over the province, and Doug’s response is to tell foreigners they can’t study here and to hand out $200 cheques.

In theory yes but they would have to stand up a line in Erie since the Boise plant is gone. Also, you would have to wonder how busy is Cummins making QSK95s for Siemens (each MP54 requires two QSK60s)
