    Colourful characters from the past

I was having coffee with a buddy the other day and referred to this thread. He reminded me of Subway Elvis. I'm surprised he hadn't come up before.

What I Miss About Toronto In 60's

Diana Sweets and the Arcade on Yonge. The Savarin on Bay. Oh... and the train to Alliston.

Toronto's relationship with the city of Buffalo, NY.

Despite the awful weather, I survived another delightful Dyngus Day in Buffalo. I come to Buffalo 2 or 3 weekends a year and for the last 5 or so years it keeps getting better and better. Canalside is coming along wonderfully and more bars, cafes, hotels and ethnic restaurants are opening. It's...

What are some ideas or innovations that Toronto became the trendsetter for, and other cities copied?

Retractable domed baseball stadiums. I don't think Montreal ever did figure out the retractable bit.

Toronto's relationship with the city of Buffalo, NY.

Dyngus Day (Easter Monday) is a big deal in Buffalo. I've been the last two years and will be heading there again this weekend. I really enjoy the parade through Polonia not to mention the Polish food, beer and music.

I'd never heard of him before. Just read the wiki. An interesting character indeed. Thanks

I love to see a photo of a Mr. Pong's car on the back of a tow truck.

Which type of cuisine(s) does Toronto shine in?

I've found Toronto's Chinese, Sri Lankan, Greek and Ethiopian restaurants compare favourably to their homelands. Italian, French, Thai and Japanese, not so much. Not sure where I would put Korean, Indian and Jamaican.

Not really a person but does anyone remember Mr. Pong's?

    Bedford Park/Lawrence Park North

    Thanks for that. Very interesting.

    Bedford Park/Lawrence Park North

Looks like someone has assembled all of the retail space in the courtyard of 3050 Yonge Street. It's a great, but hidden, location above Lawrence Station. Any scuttlebutt about what is happening?

Great. Thanks for the info. He was one of the more notable Yonge Street characters of my youth.

I often thought of adding him to this list. That's a nice tribute. Thanks for posting.

I saw Zanta at Buskerfest. He was quiet, but was carrying a sign that read "Google Zanta... Yes, Yes, Yes". Made me giggle.

Here, in North Toronto, we have a shy, quiet fellow with a graying beard and perpetually frayed pants. We call him Linus... because he is always carrying a blanket.

That's a great list. I can almost hear the Yonge Dundas preacher and his catch phrase. I'm guessing that e) is known as Zanta Claus. Haven't seen him for a while.

    Colourful characters from the past

I just recalled another character going back to mid to late '80s on Yonge Street. He was a large fellow, who always wore hot pants and a crop top t-shirt and was never seen without a huge boom box on his shoulder. Wonder where he is now? BTW, I had a Raoul "The World's Greatest Dancer" sighting...
