    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

Side by side comparison of what is and what could be in terms of wayfinding simplicity. Implementation of the Metrolinx wayfinding standard. The "walking guy" gives meaningful context, this is something outside the station. Elimination of meaningless accessibility icons and replacement with...

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

They need to figure out what to do with the quantum singularity that exists in the middle of the station. It isn't visible but it is located where the green arrow is pointing. Rather than deal with the fact it has sucked up Eglinton Ave West, Yonge Eglinton Centre, and the Eglinton Line, they...

    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

The Metrolinx leadership that created the wayfinding spec and renamed Cedarvale is unfortunately not the leadership we have now. Clearly the current political environment has permeated into the decision making at Metrolinx. How could it ever make sense for a college which receives public...

This an an art piece I'm going to title "Which way to Eglinton?"

Hamilton - Main St. E. redesign

Metrolinx should just go ahead. I don't know why they would wait for a project that is going to take three years to hang new stop lights, take down arrows, and paint a yellow line.

Wind, rain, or shine, with those shelters your face will feel it.

    Hamilton Hamilton Line B LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

... and Edmonton's LRT seems to have had no vehicle issues of note either.

    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

Naming a person doesn't have wayfinding considerations, but wayfinding is about simple and clear communication, and people use names (people names, airport names, etc) in as shortened a name possible for simple and clear communication. The number of people who say "Lester B Pearson...

    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

I'm going to attempt to convey the simplicity of wayfinding idea again a completely different way. Product simplicity Mary O'Neill and Peter Smith have two boys and two girls. How do we name them? Option A: - Peter-the-First O'Neill-Smith - Peter-the-Second O'Neill-Smith - Mary-the-First...

    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

I would suggest changing it if a study group of out of towners who had never been on a subway before found it confusing. I doubt they would though because I doubt Cedarvale Avenue in East York is well known or features prominently on the TTC map. Is ending up on Cedarvale Avenue in East York...

    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

I have never been lost myself, but I'm not stupid enough to believe the TTC has achieved wayfinding and station naming perfection with no room for improvement.

    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

Someone tells you they live on Marlee, get off at Eglinton West, vs get off at Cedarvale. Which one could get messed up? There is only one Cedarvale, but there is an Eglinton bus, an Eglinton line, an Eglinton station, an Eglinton West street in Toronto and Mississauga, an Eglinton West...

    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

That it is the station close to the Cedarvale neighborhood. A much smaller zone. You seem to think I believe Metrolinx can do no wrong. I just think the wayfinding standard is good.

    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

Yes, it tells you it is along Eglinton West which is just under a 19km stretch of road that begins at Etobicoke Creek (beyond which the street is Eglinton East) to Yonge (beyond which the street is Eglinton East). With the Science Center moving perhaps the station could be named Eglinton...

    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

The goal of wayfinding is also to minimize the noise of details that a person likely doesn't need to know at that moment as they decide whether or not to jump onto the train about to leave or not. The sign above does have what a person requires, but you need to process a lot more than required...

    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

When the lines are not in a straight line should the cardinal directions change over the course of the line? For example at East Harbour the directions would be North and West, but at Pape be North and South despite at both being Science Centre vs Exhibition?

    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

Certainly the urban layout of Toronto is part of the problem. In many cities streets don't run the same distance. Dundas exists across most of the GTA. Naming something Dundas (or many street names that run massive distances) in Toronto is to name something in a non-unique way.

    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

Some people can't navigate at all. We aren't talking about flashing lights following a path to guide people to their destination... we are asking to have it clearly indicated if getting to Yorkdale is best done by going down a certain set of stairs at Union, and that is something University...

    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

I don't think there is much I don't agree with in that video. The TTC sucks at wayfinding and definitely lives in a world where they are creating wayfinding for people who already understand the TTC. VIA is the same when they announce they are bringing back train 82 like that means something...

    Finch West Line 6 LRT

Didn't the province contribute funds? This is ridiculous. I can understand deadheading buses, non-transit buses, and buses that are stopping more frequently than VIVA, but for other transit buses like GO Transit... isn't the common goal to get people out of their cars? The busway is nowhere...
