Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Yep. The ones that stuck with the "motor hotel" monker were specifically playing up the "hotel" part. It used to be one of the big differences was that a motel typically had individual entrances and was built in a strip style, while the motor hotel typically had two or three floors (or more)...

It also dates from the era where vacation travel by car began to be more common. Motor hotels were supposed to provide the amenities and services of an upscale, traditional downtown hotel, but usually away from the downtown core along major highways. Eventually they became known simply as motels.

    Goldie's Toronto

That red life ring has always amused me. I've always imagined it was to rescue any Mercs or Audis that happen to fall into the river from the dealerships upstream.

Even the newer Aston-Martins have a bit of the same understated elegance about them. Saw the Aston-Martin One-77 at the auto show this year, parked beside a Bugatti Veyron. The Bugatti was very much a "look at me, I'm a supercar" thing. The Aston-Martin, one of only 77 made, is just a...

University Avenue - Toronto's Grand Avenue?

German Village is the revitalized area with the longest standing in Columbus. I suspect it was because of the German connection--there were a significant number of German clubs and businesses (I'm dreaming of a Schmidt's cream puff right now) that stayed in the area even as surrounding areas...

University Avenue - Toronto's Grand Avenue?

Oddly enough, I'm originally from Columbus. You're referring to German Village and Victorian Village, and to some extent, Olde Town East. Olde Town East in particular (which would probably compare to our Annex or Jarvis St. in its heyday) has a claim to be called very early suburban, but today...

University Avenue - Toronto's Grand Avenue?

I can guarantee you that few American cities consider "skinny Victorian houses" as typical suburban architecture. Victorians are generally found closer to the centres of cities, and as a result many of them suffered when downtowns depopulated. Many of these cities now have a gentrified area...

Leftist, I'll buy. The Star has always been a left-wing paper. But they have a long way down to go to reach the depths at which the Sun dwells, where they're biased, the journalistic standards are pathetic--and they're proud of it.

There is still a missing teal-coloured glass panel about 10-11 storeys up on the Bay side, and the hole looks much like particleboard from my perspective. I'm really surprised they didn't fix that at least for the Grand Opening. I understand this is still a construction site, but...ugh.

Was curious whether there were any signs of happenings from here across Bay St. Yep. Quite a few folks, some with cameras, watching from the north side of Adelaide.

Toronto non-mall retail (Odds & Ends)

A lot of their newer stand-alone stores have a distinctly Walgreens-y feel to them.

    Target

A little deja vu for me here. I was living in Thorncliffe Park in the 90s when the EYTC Woolco liquidated over a period of several weeks.

One other caveat, especially if we're talking June: It CANNOT be on a Saturday, or we will be constantly shooed away from the architectural bits by wedding photographers and wedding parties. I was there in October, and even then the place was crawling with 'em.

    Target

That makes sense. The Ajax Zellers, which is on the earliest opening list as a Target, shows no sign of closing or conversion yet, although it is looking a little sad in there (just a general sense of we don't give a f**k). Of course, the Ajax Zellers looks like it was always designed to be a...

    Restaurant Comings & Goings

Interesting. I had initially heard a rumour (somewhere in this thread, I'm thinking) that they were going to the Bay Adelaide Centre.

For those of you who enjoy "then and now" mashups, there are several of European cities during WWII and now in this article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2116708/Russian-troops-storm-Reichstag-Extraordinary-images-merge-images-European-city-streets-war-peace.html

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

I know we're wandering off-topic here...but... Actually, it's awful as a book about the medieval world. It relied on outdated sources (largely Will and Ariel Durant's multi-volume generalist history of Western civilization, which was, at the time Manchester wrote, about 40 years old) and...

The origininal Vitrolite tiles--once used for the majority of the Yonge and University line stations, now still visible in their original glory only at Eglinton station. (They're underneath the long strip-style wall coverings at Osgoode, too). Note also the original TTC typeface.

Toronto non-mall retail (Odds & Ends)

Yep, that went around December of last year. There's an artwork store there now.

Toronto non-mall retail (Odds & Ends)

For those of you following the changes in the PATH stores, it looks like the store in the TD Centre recently vacated by Grand and Toy (although they've moved elsewhere in the centre for now) along with the adjoining couple of stores is now slated to become a Shopper's by summer. That means the...
