It's a beauty. It's nice for me not to have to go off on an anti-box rant! I personally do hope that we are seeing the beginnings of a neo-PoMo backlash against neo-modernism. Also those elevated boxes do seem to make more sense now there are more of them visible. AND it's not grey, although...

Too funny! Clewes has stolen my design. But yeah, the rectangular framing makes it look like yet another aA box! Multiply this by 3000 and sprinkle in a bit more "Toronto Grey" (Benjamin Moore Paint Code 2137-60) and my vision will be complete. To everyone else, sorry I've gone off topic but...

I'm a relative newcomer to this forum and that was one of the first things I noticed. There are 2 or 3 members, maybe more, who seem to think aA can do no wrong, and react with a tantrum when their supposed "superior" tastes are questioned. I think it's a case of The Emperor's New Clothes.

I'm the first to admit that I'm a dreamer and that the market, developers' costs and technical challenges can limit what gets built, but I'd like to be surprised once in a while. Real creativity should step in to overcome these challenges and still provide more visual appeal. I'm still holding...

Sure thing. See you in Kindergarten tomorrow. We can build some grey boxy buildings from Lego. I'm sure you'll be awesome at it! ;)

Disappointing. This is a prime spot for something exceptional, and we just get a slightly dressed up box. I'm losing faith in local architects.

    Toronto Living Shangri-La Toronto | 214.57m | 66s | Westbank | James Cheng

So that's what was going on! I kept seeing this guy buzzing around outside my condo, but I couldn't figure out what he was doing. Great pictures!

Great for all you guys who get your rocks off to all these rinse and repeat boxes, but tedious for the rest of us, and the city. Keep this going and there will be an "aA Avenue" somewhere in Toronto, where clones of people walk among identical buildings in some kind of futuristic nightmare.

I agree with you on that for sure. I'm also a huge fan of Dupont Terrace. I'd love to see more projects like it.

650 Bay St Boutique Hotel Redevelopment (Lanterra, ?s, ?)

I wish I was kidding! Although there are a lot of things I like about Uptown, the starkness of the precast cladding is not one of them. I'm not suggesting they paint it as fake bricks, but some kind of texturing might save it. Gotta say that Uptown does look amazing at night in this video...

haha too true! There is a photo of him on his Facebook page that looks like him on the boom of the Shangri-La crane... https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=128639190574921&set=pu.128047697300737

Apologies if I seem to be jumping in over Caltrane, but I think the explanation is quite simple. People are different. I also like the new Four Seasons, yet I also like this, and numerous other projects that are dismissed as "clumsy" or "905" by the modernist hordes on this forum. It's a GOOD...

It's an improvement. Something similar should be done to the Uptown condo.

The fact that most people on this forum hate it leads me to believe that 99.999% of the public will like it, myself included! ;)

The contents of Clewes' head can be represented as this BASIC program from the 1980s.... 10 PRINT "Glass box with balconies" 20 GOTO 10

Steveve, don't ever lose your enthusiasm. It's a great gift that some of us old bastards have lost over time! :)

That's a pretty bizarre comment. Remove the stand-out features from ANY building, and it will not stand out! As for the other 5-stars, Ritz has the shape, but the cladding is pretty bleak, Shangri-La is a winner all round, but other than us freaks on forums like this, the average Joe on the...

Wow, that diagram really shows what an opportunity we've missed during this boom. All this investment, and we've ended up with a bunch of glass boxes. Such a shame. :(
