Wait, there's more than one mall? That makes no sense! Why would there be more than one mall?

    Toll Roads

Grid City The key, I think, is to think of tolls as incentives, and to toll in a way that aligns these incentives with what we want urban planning to do. (There's an analogy here with Internet access pricing, come to think of it. But let's not go there.) If we're going to toll, then I agree...

    Toronto 2015 Pan American Games

Look, the Pan Am games will be exactly what we make of them. If we want to turn them into a B-list event -- despite their A-list standing throughout Latin America and the Caribbean -- then we will certainly be successful. If we want to give it our all, tie in LatAm themes from all other...

    Ideas for funding the TTC?

If I remember right, that's 17% from taxpayers on commercial property, and 13% from taxpayers on residential property. So I think you mean 13%, not 30%. Of course, since you are focussed on who pays taxes to subsidize the TTC, what you really mean is surely not that non-Torontonians should pay...

    Richmond Hill Yonge Line 1 North Subway Extension | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Wait, you want to build an LRT that is for those commuters "within walking distance of a VIVA stop"? I love it. Hey, if the distance to VIVA is not much further than the distance to your car, an LRT for you! In the meantime, I think you'll find that the modal split on who gets to Finch how...

Should Transit City be cancelled? A re-prioritization of how to allocate the funding.

Yes; there has never been any disagreement there. What I did say, though, was that I thought it was a good near-term substitute for extending the DRL north of Eglinton.

Should Transit City be cancelled? A re-prioritization of how to allocate the funding.

It sounds like you're saying that you hit on Steeles because it is a municipal boundary. But your working approach is to look at current, exists-today development -- your assumption, certainly not mine. I would have thought Cummer would be much more consistent with your assumption. Why would...

Should Transit City be cancelled? A re-prioritization of how to allocate the funding.

If you mean to say that one mustn't muse about shifts in traffic without floating percentage numbers to such musing then, of course, I think you are being silly. But if your point is that LRT-izing RH GO would have minimal tangible impact, or virtually no impact, on Yonge line traffic, then...

Should Transit City be cancelled? A re-prioritization of how to allocate the funding.

What are you talking about? And how did you arrive at the conclusion that the purpose of the Yonge extension is to serve "a handful of commuters at Royal Orchard"? It all sounds quite bizarre. Leaving aside whether or not this makes sense -- it doesn't -- how did you hit on Steeles as...

Should Transit City be cancelled? A re-prioritization of how to allocate the funding.

You've lost me. I think an improved/integrated RH line would take a lot of riders off the Yonge line -- namely, a huge chunk of the riders coming from the east, of which there are a ton. Do you disagree?

Should Transit City be cancelled? A re-prioritization of how to allocate the funding.

Right, but by the same token, if the DRL has stations every 1 km or so then, by the time it hits Eglinton, you're not heading anywhere very fast. Clearly an LRT-ized GO line wouldn't have too many more stations that it has now, and very few (2 or so) between Eglinton and Union. It'd be an...

    Richmond Hill Yonge Line 1 North Subway Extension | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

I like this idea, as it would result in some combination of a new transfer for substantial numbers of riders, and low LRT use by targetted riders who, instead, figure they'll skip the transfer -- both of which would mesh nicely with Transit City. :D

Should Transit City be cancelled? A re-prioritization of how to allocate the funding.

In terms of bang for buck and relieving the Yonge line, wouldn't it be tremendously cheaper to LRT-ize the GO RH line with near-subway-like frequencies and stops somewhere downtown and at interconnecting Eglinton, Sheppard, Finch lines? I realize that you probably wouldn't get a Bloor stop...

    Transit City: Sheppard East Debate

Yeah, including this weird assumption as part of the cost-benefit was just ludicrous. Come to think of it, why didn't Option 4 incorporate cement blocks at every intersection to block off a lane of traffic? Then it clearly would have won the day. Speaking of cost-benefit: "Possible cost...

    Toronto 2015 Pan American Games

No, Rio just held the games -- on the table are Lima and Bogota. The fact that the Pan Am Games are a huge Latin American event does not, in my opinion, lead to the conclusion that the voters will want to see it given to another Latin American city. I would think they'd want to see this big...

    Markham World on Yonge | ?m | 31s | Liberty Development | Kirkor Architects

Good point. If Yonge-Finch can have hit 25 storeys of office towers years ago, it's jarring that nothing north of Steeles is even at 20 -- but I guess it's true that the Xerox towers as an officey employment node are more of an exception than anything else in the northern suburbs. More...
