    Innisfil Sunseeker at Friday Harbour | ?m | 6s | Geranium | Rafael + Bigauskas

I really hope we get those colourful balconies. Friday Harbour is turning out to be a very unique and appealing community and destination with its walkable built form, density, waterfront location, and mix of uses.

    Toronto Scala | 61.57m | 18s | Tridel | Wallman Architects

Assuming the build quality was good, Tridel built a winner. I love the terraced architecture with interesting patterns along the facade.

    Toronto 8 Wellesley | Residences at Yonge | 182.15m | 55s | CentreCourt | Arcadis

The owners of the heritage buildings along Yonge should be more invested in the public realm. It's sad to see Victorian after Victorian with abandoned 2nd and 3rd floors. Queen West has a similar Victorian built form, but more buildings are restored with upper floors that are actually used.

    Raymond Moriyama 1929-2023

He made significant contributions to Modernist architecture in the city, together with the likes of John B. Parkin, Peter Dickinson, Eb Zeidler, Uno Prii, and Jack Diamond. My sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. May he rest in piece.

    Toronto 34 Southport | 99m | 29s | State Building Group | Richmond Architects

This area is quite nice being in close proximity to High Park, the Humber River, and the waterfront. It's surprising that this project's architecture is so generic.

    Toronto Union Station Revitalization | ?m | ?s | City of Toronto | NORR

It's hard to match replacement stone with the original stone unless it comes from the same quarry. We're fortunate that the quarry still exists. I don't believe the Credit Valley quarry for the sandstone used in building the provincial legislature exists anymore. Even if you can source stone...

    UrbanToronto is Celebrating 20 Years

Urban Toronto sparked a lifelong interest in urbanism and rekindled my childhood interest in architecture. I was admittedly ignorant when I joined on a lot of urban issues, but people here usually responded thoughtfully, respectfully, and intelligently. I learned a lot and quickly realized that...

Roads: Ambassador & Gordie Howe Bridges

That's great. I don't think we do it often enough, though.

I also wish we'd put out-of-province cities on highway signage. It seems so provincial to put Cornwall on a sign indicating the distances to major cities along the 401 but not to include Montreal.

    Toronto Crosstown LRT: Caledonia Station | 11.72m | 2s | Metrolinx | McCallum Sather

It strikes me as bad design not to include any connections from the GO platform to the neighbourhood to the south of Eglinton, especially considering that the tracks are already grade separated from Eglinton (meaning that there's no need to dig under Eglinton). They also eliminated this...

    Toronto Ontario Place | ?m | ?s | Infrastructure ON

I would build the line through the CNE grounds underground on a diagonal with an underground station in the middle of Ontario Place. Then, I'd do a U towards the mainland under the lake towards Parkdale or Humber Bay Shores. Now that would be a civic asset of a line that secures our quality of...

    Toronto Ontario Place | ?m | ?s | Infrastructure ON

I'd love to see an Ontario Line station within Ontario Place itself. With an Ontario Line station, the province could save money by building a smaller parking garage or eliminating the parking garage idea altogether for Ontario Place. Ontario Place's original source of inspiration, the Expo 67...

    Roads: Traffic Signals

There are plenty of intersections in Toronto where you have to wait at least a minute if you press the "beg" button. I've never seen an implementation of the system locally where if the traffic light for cars is green but the pedestrian signal is "don't walk" (because no one pressed the button...

    Burlington Holland Park Garden | ?m | 37s | CLV Group | Core Architects

My wife grew up in the area south of the QEW. She says that locals have opposed redeveloping junk like this plaza and a plan to replace part of the surface parking lot here with a condo. People also opposed bike lanes on New Street.

    Burlington Holland Park Garden | ?m | 37s | CLV Group | Core Architects

The NIMBYism you see in Burlington is among the worst. People will fight to preserve ugly big-box plazas when attractive mixed-use developments are proposed.

Toronto St Lawrence Market North | 25.3m | 5s | City of Toronto | Rogers Stirk Harbour

What baffles me is that it’s not like Toronto was poor in the mid 2010s. This city was more prosperous than ever. The civic austerity of the era was unjustifiable.

Toronto St Lawrence Market North | 25.3m | 5s | City of Toronto | Rogers Stirk Harbour

It's like we often go with starchitect firms just to say we had them design our buildings, not because we love architecture and a beautiful public realm. It's like the person who buys the cheapest Mercedes just to say he or she owns a Mercedes.

    Markham Courtyards at Cathedraltown | ?m | 5s | King David

All of our greenfield suburbs should be dominated by low-rise and mid-rise buildings with spacious condos from 1,000 to 3,000 square feet and with commercial space on the lower floors along major streets. They should be comfortable, spacious, and have low maintenance fees.

    Cornell a failure?

Mount Pleasant is great for perhaps 2-3 city blocks with a walkable mixed-use built form and an attractive public space around the library. Then, it reverts to Brampton's typical car-dependent SFH built form for perhaps a dozen blocks. The fact that compact, pedestrian-friendly and...

    Toronto 191 Bay | 301.74m | 64s | QuadReal | Hariri Pontarini

We're probably going to see a game of musical chairs for some time as companies downsize their office space and other companies choose to relocate downtown and take over the empty space. Eventually, assuming the city keeps growing, we'll once again see demand for more office space...
