I've seen one fall in many, many years. And yes, two of us grabbed him and got him up enough that he could get a hold of something and pull himself up. Most harnesses have built in foot straps now so that you can lift your feet and extend how long you can dangle. Theoretically, any worker who...

    Glass requirements in Toronto highrises

Depends where it is, how high it is, and a bunch of other factors. Ideally it's tempered *and* laminated though. There's at least two panes of glass in each unit. Tempering the inside pane to protect against kicks isn't really helpful. It's the outside pane that would need the protection, if...

Not sure if it's the case here, but sometimes they have un-glazed curtainwall frames for where the braces are, and they coordinate with the crane to temporarily reposition the brace, install the frame, then put the brace back through the frame. That might be what they're doing here, since they...

It's remarkable how different this stretch of Yonge feels with this tower. It's really fleshed out the streetscape

There's something about it that makes me think of Residences of College Park. It looks like a slightly refined version of RoCP.

WSIB would pay the worker, then go after Concord.

    Is University Really Worth it?

Yep, everything you say is accurate. I'm ticketed, in a union, and found myself a very lucrative niche where there's only a few dozen people who really do what I do. For every guy like me there's twenty guys pounding sand for minimum wage. I guess you could probably see similar trends in most...

    Is University Really Worth it?

I had a post on the first page of this thread, 14 years ago (!), and my sentiments have been reinforced since then. I currently hold four degrees (three bachelors and a masters), including one of those coveted STEM degrees, a ton of certifications, several years experience in multiple fields...

The GC may have been talking about  his complement (labourers and swampers), or just the forming (form guys, rodmen, concrete, finishers) Depending on the job it's nothing for me to run 15-20 guys just for the cladding. You're definitely not putting up a tower with 30 guys. Between the...

25 per trade, maybe. A typical high rise has probably got a couple hundred guys on site

    Toronto Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s

I know they were also the names of wards, and also the names of nearby churches, but I always figured the naming was more of a British homage thing, with stations being named for the patron saints of England, Ireland, and Scotland (and then with Queen's Park thrown in for good measure).

I also find the streetscape cold and abysmal, but It's worth remembering they were up against some constraints with the subway tunnel, the ventilation shafts, and the above grade garage. They could (and should!) have done better here, but it also wasn't an easy site

I'm looking at it and trying to figure out what doesn't work. They've got nice big spans of glass, the stone material looks ok by itself, they tried to articulate things a bit with those big caps... Maybe if they swapped out the big grey vertical fins up the middle of the stone for a shallower...

That's unfortunate. That doesn't look like a cheap wall, but the colours and trim just don't seem to work

Neat! If we're going to get a POPS there I'd love to see something that references the original Arcade that was on the site. Maybe as a covered open-air market? Seems like it'd be a place where small vendor stalls could work

That could in part be because of the double height floors. Even if they reinforced the mullions that's still a long span that'll allow for some deflection. Curious to see if they stiffen up on the typical floors

605-617 Lawrence Avenue West (Stephen Maizels, ?s, ?)

The field to the north belongs to the city, not the school, and is slated to be removed when Varna gets realigned as part of the Lawrence Heights revitalization And that school is badly underutilized and has an enormous repair backlog. It's unlikely to be there in its current form a decade from now

Yorkville is also very dense with tailors and seamstresses. If you want custom work done it's probably the best part of town to head to. Granted, they may not be getting their fabrics from Fabricland. But it's not just home hobbyists who might shop there
