The seemingly terminal decline of Tim Hortons

Overall I haven't been there in ages except when I'm in a pinch, but the things I really notice about Tim's in recent years is that: - Many of them are critically understaffed (often with a few beleaguered TFW Indians/Filipinos), and service times are much worse than McDonald's. - The interior...

    McGill in Toronto

I mentioned in another thread that perhaps the Ontario Science Centre site + perhaps the unsold parking lots could work as well. Of course, if it isn't already accounted for already... The Portlands are a bit of a stretch, but could work if the city gets its act together to build the Waterfront...

    Toronto Public Library Catch-All

At the same time I don't think it fits in quite well in this forum- it would be really great if UT gets an additional 'Public/Civic Space' subforum since that arguably is the missing element between Buildings and Infrastructure (really mostly transportation), and something that really deserves...

    PM Justin Trudeau's Canada

Good luck disincentivizing illegal migration after this. https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/canada-create-citizenship-path-undocumented-immigrants-globe-mail-2023-12-14/

    Yonge-Dundas Square/Sankofa Square (Brown + Storey Architects)

Funny little zinger at the end: Also, what kind of connection does Sankofa have with Toronto besides being some concept which is not necessarily Ghana-exclusive?

    New University...where should it go?

No sympathy for Montreal institutions from the CAQ government, and time to start moving from Ontario's end. https://montrealgazette.com/news/local-news/quebec-moves-ahead-with-tuition-hike-french-requirements-at-english-universities

    Parks - new & revitalized

It would be nice to get something on the Green P parking on the other side of Yonge.

    Observation Decks/Spaces

The attraction in full: IMO the Rockefeller Centre has the best observation deck in NYC, on account of its two-tiered layout, which allows the upper terrace to avoid needing the fall protection you often get at most observation decks these days.

    Roads: Gardiner Expressway

Yes, the true problem with the Gardiner is the Lakeshore and its web of ramps. Put the Gardiner under ground, and you're still dealing with a 6-lane boulevard + the ramps, which are now simply inverted. Where the Lakeshore isn't there, you can get the Bentway, or in the case of Eastern Ave, the...

    PM Justin Trudeau's Canada

As I said before most of these aren't really even 'international students' in the traditional sense given that every degree-mill 'college' now has an 'international program'- it's just a very underhanded way of creating a new indentured class (and one that is largely Indian) for our corporations...

    Toronto 2453-2469 Bloor West | 47.2m | 12s | Leader Lane | BDP Quadrangle

Those setbacks are ridiculous but I think they'll make for some amazing units at the top levels.

    Toronto The Well | 174.03m | 46s | RioCan | Hariri Pontarini

Lawrence Allen is really more of a local's mall, with amenities like a Fortino's (good iced capp), a Canadian Tire, and a couple of other middle-tier stores and health services. Certainly not a mall to splash money around, but not a useless mall either. My thoughts on the Well- the interior...

    New University...where should it go?

Resurrecting this thread as I was reading this article about the plight of Montreal-area English Universities following the enforced out-of-province tuition hikes by the CAQ in October- I wonder if a prudent Ontario government would begin discussions on Ontario campuses for Quebec English unis...

Canada Life Building 344 University Avenue (?, ?s, GWL)

I doubt the historic Canada Life building will be touched (though it could be converted into condos given its antiquated floor plates), but I could very much see redevelopment of 190 Simcoe, and possibly 206 Simcoe (the adjacent parking structure)? In fact, I recall that 190 Simcoe was long...

    Toronto 619 Yonge | 237.99m | 70s | YI Developments | Core Architects

Ultimately what replaces it needs to be far better than what was there before. Hence the overreactive heritage preservation laws once our developers proved incapable of reliably doing so. I mean, what's stopping them from proposing something like this...

    Toronto 300 Front Street West | 156.05m | 49s | Tridel | Wallman Architects

Not really an update, but I passed by this building recently and the park and art installation are completely wrecked- I think it’s been taken over as a quasi- dog park. This would probably count as a green space design/maintenance failure @Northern Light .

Toronto Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport | ?m | ?s | Ports Toronto | Arup

On one hand I think the airport is still an asset despite its detractors- on the other hand, all truly great cities have a large urban park near their downtown cores- like El Retiro in Madrid or City Park in Budapest (and let’s not get started about London or New York)- parks that also host...
