    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

The thing is, a traffic jam in Kitchener is not the same as a traffic jam in the GTA. I just chuckle when I hear people from smaller towns complaining of slow downs that add a few minutes of delay while in the GTA every major highway has about a 20+ minute delay in the peak hour.

    Roads: 403/401/410 Interchange (MTO)

And in 1974 the population of Peel Region was only 350,000 compared with about 1.5 million today. Shows how highway construction has fallen far behind population growth.

Roads: Gardiner Expressway catch-all, incl. Hybrid Design (2015-onwards)

They're probably waiting a bit as there is too much going on right now. DRL and Yonge North subway under construction. Many condos everywhere. Even if the Gardiner was removed tomorrow, it would take so much time for development to get going. Basically there is too much going on elsewhere...

    Roads: GTA West Corridor—Highway 413

There are these things called trucks. Not so easy to shift their modality as the GTA population grows steadily. GTA West would greatly alleviate all trucks heading east on 401 then north on 400. The interchange badly needs relief.

Roads: Highway 401 Widening - Highway 8 to Highway 410 (MTO, U/C, Planned)

OPP should be camping in the express and ticketing every truck driving in the left lane. There's no reason for trucks to be there as the collector will eventually merge there anyways.

What he's proposing though is more like a 99.9% safety factor. The barrier on 407ETR is already 1.05m high. Constructing a 2m tall barrier along every 400 series highway would be a waste of hundreds of millions of dollars.

That's not how engineering works though. You can't over design everything because it would be too expensive. Governments can't afford it. There are diminishing returns by spending more money.

Gardiner was closed this weekend. Found these shots of some of the work being done on Linkedin.

It's simply would not be cost effective to do so. This median barrier is used on all 400 series freeways (400, 401, 427, 404, QEW, etc).

    Roads: 403/401/410 Interchange (MTO)

I meant the new express bridges over Fletcher's Creek (you can see on Google Earth the collectors bridges were already built). Credit River bridges won't be built until this: http://www.infrastructureontario.ca/Hwy-401-Expansion/

    Roads: 403/401/410 Interchange (MTO)

Won't the removal of the existing Fletcher's Creek culvert be done in the winter (where the existing/express lanes are now)? Construction of the new bridges would also start in the winter.

    Roads: 403/401/410 Interchange (MTO)

I wonder if they made a mistake when planning the 410 width. Either by underestimating Brampton's population explosion as well as their dependance on the car. Between Queen and Bovaird there is only enough median available to add just an HOV lane in each direction (which looks pretty cheap and...

Work for the QEW-Dixie project has begun: http://www.qewdixiedetaildesign.ca/ Lanes are shifted at Etobicoke Creek with orange markings. The first contract is to replace and widen the QEW bridges over Etobicoke Creek. The major 2nd contract will follow which is replacing the entire Dixie...

Roads: Six Points Interchange Reconfiguration (City of Toronto, UC)

It is pretty far though. I wonder how that distance compares to some of the larger GO parking lots? At Yonge/Finch the farthest spots are also 500-600m away.

Park at the new south lot and get some exercise!

Roads: Six Points Interchange Reconfiguration (City of Toronto, UC)

You guys are nuts. The area is getting 3 new great infrastructure projects so of course there will be construction traffic impacts. The signals at Dundas/Aukland were obviously a mistake by the contractor (these things happen). Short term pain for long term gain.

Roads: Gardiner Expressway catch-all, incl. Hybrid Design (2015-onwards)

Gardiner bridge spans are very conventional and pretty much will never totally collapse (though of course still vulnerable to chunks of deteroriated concrete falling), compared to the Italian bridge which was an unusual design.

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Based on the source document, a significant amount of trucks are heading north from the west. The proposed GTA west highway would be able to redirect these very effectively to help de-clog this bottleneck.

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Except no one going to the airport uses this section of 401. How quickly people make fun of 401 for being called a "bypass" originally and then forget that there were more urban expressways in the original plan that would actually have let 401 operate as a bypass.
