General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

The other day I noticed a bike lane on a short, narrow, quiet residential street running either from Dundas to Queen, or from Queen to Eastern - I can't recall which. What a waste to time putting a bike lane a small street with virtually no traffic. I guess it looked good on a map. The people...

    Unions!

Seriously? 24 weeks vacation a year? Anything that preferential should get you hated. And yet, politicians love to promise more police officers. Highly paid civil servants getting half the year off. Can't be.

Is that question open to any one? Uhh....lower! Do I win?

RBC Centre (LEED Gold, CadFair, 41s, KPF/B+H/&Co.) COMPLETE

I like the way this building closes in the south side of Metro Hall square. Give the square something of an amphitheatre feel when you stand in front of Metro Hall and look east.

    Toronto Union Pearson Express | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | MMM Group Limited

And how does the BILLIONS that would cost compare with the Blue-22 proposal? This proposal is for a modest investment to get an entry-level train service going to the airport from downtown using standard rail infrastructure and what are, admittedly, probably substandard trains. (But that...

    "Businesses Fleeing to the 905"

It seems that by calling roads a 'no fee service' I set off a storm of debate. I wasn't saying that they are 'free' or that drivers are getting a deal, simply that there is no fee per use. Aside from the 407, this is true. I was responding to Dichotomy's complaint that the roads are now...

    "Businesses Fleeing to the 905"

A no-fee public service is always going to be used to its limits. The answer is road tolls coupled with investment in alternatives. I'm sure the Board of Trade appreciates this :) That's just more convenience. Taking kids to clubs and soccers, etc. only requires a car when these things are...

    Toronto Union Pearson Express | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | MMM Group Limited

You make it sound like business travelers are a rare thing. There are a lot of business travelers going between the BCD and Pearson every day. At $20 it's cheaper than a taxi. If it's reliably quick - and 22 minutes isn't bad - then it makes sense even for 2 people traveling together. I...

    Toronto Union Pearson Express | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | MMM Group Limited

I think Weston residents's concern about noise and 'splitting' of their community are justified and they should have an official forum for those concerns. But when they digress into the nature of the service or the type of train used, then they're exploiting their standing as an affected...

Fast Track? From the Star This Sullivan guy seems to think living in Weston gives him the right to dictate the details of an important piece of regional infrastructure. Community groups often adopt a tone of entitlement that make them annoying.

    "Businesses Fleeing to the 905"

When I was looking to move back to Toronto in 2006, I was concerned that I might have a hard time finding good work in the city - because of all the gloomy reports of business moving to the 905 in the last 15 years - especially technology companies. But it was no problem and I've moved...

    Future of Commuting - Forbes

Haven't you noticed the solar panel hats on top of our meters? I don't think they provide all of the power, but they may be part of the reason the those stupid meters die in snowstorms.

How to stop bicycle thieves in Toronto?

That may be a useful attitude to adopt to protect your bike, but the moralizing tone you put over top of it is obnoxious. You're saying, "You can expect to be victimized, so if you fail to make the sacrifices necessary to protect yourself, it's your own fault." Applied to other situations...

Greyhound: Apart from that, how was your experience today?

Like something from a Cohen brothers or David Lynch film. Hard to fathom.

    Future of Commuting - Forbes

Racing down an empty coastal highway in a sports car is an appealing image for most people. No one is claiming that mass transit is liberating or sexy. But in real life people actually make decisions about their mode of transport based on a balance of convenience and cost. The 16 year old...

    Future of Commuting - Forbes

The argument against buses as a lower cost alternative to cars is also based on low ridership - the buses are empty most of the time. More circular reasoning - or at least treating the present as unchangeable: People won't turn to transit because it is expensive because people don't use...

    Future of Commuting - Forbes

There's a series of articles on Forbes.com confidently asserting that the car centric, exurban culture will withstand the collapse of the oil economy. http://www.forbes.com/leadership/2008/07/29/commuting-work-careers-lead-commuting08-cx_mn_mk_0729commute_land.html An interesting topic to...

    Privitization of Toronto Services

Well said. It's also not the city's job to try to raise the level of compensation in the labour market by dictating employment practices to the vendors they deal with. The city's job is to provide services to the residents at a good value. Our left wing councilors don't acknowledge the...

    Boxes for moving?

Check craigslist. We gave away our moving boxes last year through craigslist. Probably a couple of hundred dollars worth of really good, professional moving company boxes. It was much easier than bundling them up for recycling. You'll have to be fast though. Demand for moving boxes is high.
