Toronto Clare R. Copeland Transformer Station | ?m | ?s | Toronto Hydro | Arcadis

Councillor Malik's office has told one of my neighbours - FROM Toronto Hydro

"Our construction work for the Copeland Station is still ongoing but is currently expected to finish by Spring 2024. We are also in the process of coordinating some final access/safety details with the City. Once these are done, there will be a few final weather-dependent landscaping tasks.

As with all things weather and construction-related, it’s challenging to give a precise date but we are hopeful that the parkette can be opened public use by early Summer."
This is 'early summer' - still not open!

This never opened parkette looks finished but very rough, as if it's been abandoned for a decade. Oh wait, it was. The fences were pushed to the side so I went up. Sorry no pictures, but that's probably for the best. Ugh.

Update from Councillor Mallik's Office, June 2025

The parkette on the roof of the Copeland Transformer Station hasn’t been opened to the public yet.

Our Facilities Team is still working on the site and with City Staff to resolve an assortment of outstanding issues, primarily related to physical safety and security around an actively in-use Station with high voltage equipment and heavy-duty vehicle access. Arson and trespassing incidents around the station and parkette have raised particular concerns.

These issues have required us to take another look at preventative measures to have in place before the parkette can be safely opened. This includes safety and access related signage; pedestrian risk mitigations for unassumed road with semi-trailer truck access, security camera coverage and alarms for monitoring, etc.

We are hopeful that this work will be completed over the coming months with the parkette ready to open by the Fall of 2025.

This was a bad idea from the start. Just remove the park. Too many vehicles in the back. They don’t want people back there.

What park? All I see is a pupper!! 🥹🐾
The UT Safety Dog is guarding access to the supposed Park which is on top of the transformer station. It may well be time to admit this park will never open but if it had been developed as part of a commercial development I am sure the City would be able to extract $$$ from the builders/owners as 'compensation'. Having a public park there was part of the approvals. I am not sure the City has the power to force Toronto hydro to provide compensation (additional $$ to fix the adjacent Salmon Run Fountain?) but ...

Someone needs to embarrass the city into answering for this. It’s been “scheduled to open” for what, a decade? The Fixer would love this. Maybe send him pics and screenshots of the city’s promises to open this every year since 1892.

What does Hydro have to do with the park? They’ve completed the station and handed the property over to the city years ago. Ausma Malik’s staff have committed to it opening in the Spring… of 2024… 2025… this Spring. 😂
No, my understanding is that Hydro were not prepared to allow the City to open the park because of the security of the Transformer Station. I THINK they have not yet 'released it' to the City.
