2026 Toronto Mayoral Race

Fear that no extreme candidate would win from that point forward.
Ironically, the absence of ranked balloting might have "saved" Olivia Chow ("extreme" due to her being NDP) in the byelection, if one assumes that the anti-Olivias would have ranked their way to Bailao.

I think those who oppose more representative electoral systems think they can accurately game the outcomes. Ford thought he would be able to cement a right wing ally by splitting the left and the opposite happened. Just give us ranked balloting, so we don't have to have this weird backroom nonsense before the election.

And he also thought he'd nuke the left when it cut Council in half in '18--instead, the left held its own and even reinforced itself (the Mammo vs Perruzza race being a key example)

Anthonly Furey's out too. As much as I dislike Furey, him dropping out of the mayoral race effective leaves Brad Bradford - who must be stopped at all costs - as the only primary challenger to Olivia Chow. Very concerned about Chow's re-election chances because of this. 😭

I’m not super worried about Bradford yet as he’s very unlikeable with little support in the conservative Family Compact that gave us two of the past five post-amalgamation mayors. But Chow has to give the rest of us the reason to get out and vote for her.
