Toronto David Crombie Park Revitalization | ?m | ?s | City of Toronto

^I wonder how much interaction there is between The Esplanade and East Bayfront to the south?

I'm glad it's going to become a park. Hopefully in the future, the pedestrianized Market Street can be extended further south, connecting David Crombie Park to the new Market Lane Park and St. James Park as one linear continuous park. View attachment 722663
That is the 'plan' - though it is more likely that the section of Market from Front to The Esplanade will be a proper (full-time) pedestrian area (think 'plaza') rather than a 'real park' with big trees and plants.

Market Street is fine as a plaza. It’s lined with trees on one side and patios with plantings on the other. Parks have hard surfaces too. Market Lane Park itself will be largely hard surfaces with tree wells.

Local Facebook groups are up in arms over the removal of mature trees, with some suggesting they form a human ring around them for protection, and many others demanding to know why they weren’t personally consulted.

I think the best one was the person who was mad at the project plan and the “lack of consultation” that was done…having only recently moved into the area themselves and unaware of every consultation that was made.

I feel like block 1 is gonna be equally controversial as everyone puts up their dream ideas. I say park it. Most market goers don’t make it across Jarvis to Crombie, and with the market doing stuff for Christmas it would be a nice outdoor space for them to use. Though I feel like with this much park across the Esplanade and the St Lawrence Market creating a solid picnic crowd, you’d need to get some bathrooms in there.

With the loss of the St Lawrence Library I wouldn’t mind a TPL pick-up depot if that’s feasible within the space. And no, no affordable housing on top. People use the term as a panacea, as if it’ll solve all ills. Devs use it to be their way to breaking height restrictions. Maple House/Cherry House was supposed to be affordable and still aren’t full. Park or simple book depot we can build in a year.

I'm more bummed for the kids at the school that essentially lost their playground. They couldn't do that section when school's out?

Yes, the St Lawrence Neighbourhood Assn last night was also treated to earnest pleas about 'the poor trees' as though the removal of dead and dying trees had not been repeatedly discussed and the statement that more (far more) trees will be planted in both David Crombie and Market Lane Parks.

Have you actually been to the site?? Obviously not! They have set up a separate fenced playground one block further east.

That's great to hear! I walk by on Jarvis a few times a week, but don't always walk on Esplanade - especially in winter/early spring.

As we have some pole-obsessed UTers (yes, @nightstreak we are thinking of you!) they (actually 'we') may want to see if the City can get Bell to remove this old wooden telephone pole from David Crombie Park at corner of George South & The Esplanade.

It may bring phone service to the school but there must be underground conduits they could use. I wrote to 'Tonya.Crawford@toronto.ca' who is now managing this Project to ask if she can get it tidied up.
