Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Good effort @TwoWheelPoli .....but what's w/you sneakily changing the colour of your avatar..........it completely threw me for a second; I was thinking there was an imposter at work!

***

Side note .... to the above post...........my section of Danforth has had the bike lanes cleared, though the snow removal (on sidewalks) hasn't yet reached the eastern part of Danforth. I encountered (passed) two elderly women walking going the opposite way on Danforth last night, and one said to the other "Look at that (pointed at the cleared bike lane)......... "They're so special......how ridiculous to clear that when the sidewalks are still such a mess; politics so corrupt"

LOL

Which is to say, the City really can't win, there's no pleasing everyone (or anyone?) ....

Final snow-related note on this..........someone in my area is the spouse of a front-line snow removal staffer.............and noted she's barely seen him in a week, he's logged 100 hours in the last week and a bit. That means 10-12 hour days, six or seven days a week.

So its not that staff aren't trying, but the scale of the problem far exceeds the resources.

Sloane Road Safety Improvements *downgraded* from cycle tracks to bicycle lanes with a painted buffer. Almost cries of Jones 2.0

That's awful - but not surprising - how Councillor Burnside held this consultation on January 12 and I didn't hear about this until you mentioned it more than a month later! Also disappointed how the design got downgraded to buffered bike lanes.

In other news, the City of Toronto will be hosting a consultation for the Sandhurst Circle Neighbourhood Connections on Saturday, February 28 (1 - 4 PM) at Albert Campbell Collegiate Institute (1550 Sandhurst Circle). You can also complete the survey by Saturday, March 14.

I know they’re probably restricted by code or something, but they’ve reconstructed the northbound bike lane at Front and Sherbourne in a way that will encourage drivers to park in the lane while picking up their Tim Hortons (Tim Hortons will be returning to that corner).

They left enough room for 2 cars to squeeze in there before the lane rises to sidewalk level.

Though I should go and look at it on site, I think you are, maybe, too pessimistic. Formerly the section just north of Front was driveways to the gas station and was level with the car lanes but I THINK they have actually raised that section up to sidewalk level as the orange barrels in your photo are clearly showing a height difference from the road to the bike lane (and it may get higher as they need to pave the bike lane and maybe add a 'top' to the concrete curb.) Here is what that section used to look like:

A virtual public meeting will be held on Monday, March 2 (6:30 - 8:00 PM) regarding the David Crombie Park revitalization including the Esplanade-Mill cycle tracks. Please register to learn more about the project and construction timelines.

Good news for Guelph to Goderich (G2G) Rail Trail users! Per this Guelph Today article, funding has been secured to help fill the 2.7 km trail gap from Woodlawn Road to Silvercreek Parkway North which the City of Guelph hopes to finish by next year. Something which I know a number of Toronto cyclists have either biked or wanted to bike.

That’s not the gap I’d like to see filled first, though it’s fine. More importantly, getting up to the trailhead from Guelph on a busy county road north of Woodlawn is not pleasant. There are still too many bridges that were removed by CP after abandonment that result in long detours, though I heard one of those near Wallenstein will be replaced.

Actually, never mind my pervious post, the Woodlawn to Silvercreek does correct the gap into Guelph. It's confusing at first because County Road 39 is not called Silvercreek Pkwy north of Guelph's city boundary. So that's good.

The first gap encountered is near West Montrose, where trail users must get off the trail at Katharine St (RR 23) and go through the covered bridge and then climb back up the hill on Covered Bridge Drive. The bridge makes a really scenic detour, but it does add a lot of time and elevation changes (and some unwanted motor traffic). I'd love to see that bridge over the Grand River restored.

Here's the info about the Wallenstein Bridge project, led by Region of Waterloo. West of there, there are several more gaps in G2G (with one more long detour near Auburn), but the above two projects deal with two of the four most lengthy.

The Lower Don Trail is on to its umpteenth Project Manager so I emailed him for an update and got this, fairly optimistic and speedy response.

The trail is well on track to be opened this spring, with a current target opening of late April/early May 2026. The project website will be updated once a firm date is established, which we anticipate finalizing in April.
