Richmond Hill Yonge Line 1 North Subway Extension | Metrolinx

Hopefully this rules out any possibility of replacement cars being reallocated for YNSE/SSE service expansion, as I've been saying all along...
They never were to begin with. All level of gov't secured a procurement for 70 trains, 55 for 2, 15 for YNSE/SSE per the TTC. The Ontario govt announcements for buying new train cars were only for 55, so they are only for 2. The govt will probably act on the other 15 when SSE and YNSE are nearing completion, but they have only bought 55 that were specifically already earmarked for 2 and not bought 15 earmarked for SSE/YNSE.

There definitely is some talk within TTC's fleet planning that the completion of fleet replacement might stretch all the way until 2035 (!) due to some of the 55 replacement trains potentially being used for the extensions instead, and I assume the reason the additional 15 haven't been ordered yet is because they're still not funded (unlike the first batch of 55). Though if the add-on order is placed while the 55 are being delivered, the delivery of the extra batch should be seamless. But besides the extra 15 for YNSE/SSE, there's also talk of more for future capacity improvements on both lines (so the total would be 80, iirc). In an ideal scenario, the 55 should fully replace the old ones around 2033, and the additional 15 should come in 2034/2035. Hopefully this is what ends up happening.

I actually don't know why everyone thinks 2035 is way beyond their useful life. It's not. The trains are designed for 30 years life with the last of the batch entering service around 2001. This would only make the last trains 34 years old to retire in 2035. In contrast, the H4 and H5s retired around 37-38 years old. While the CLRVs stretched closed to 40 years old. So 2035 isn't an unrealistic date for final retirements. Not to mention these new trains would be designed to last till 2060-2065 with some trains possibly retiring close to 2070, a date that half the folks here might not even see.

That's assuming they retire sequentially, which may or may not be the case. Also not all the H5s reached 35–36, the youngest were only 33. And the H2s were barely 30 despite being as reliable as the H4s. Even if the lifespan of any individual T1 doesn't exceed 35 years, the lifespan of the whole collective fleet would still end up being 40, and if none of the H4/5s reached close to 40 the T1s shouldn't either.

Well obviously, since that would align with a 30-year design life (although the RFP called for a 35-year design life).
with some trains possibly retiring close to 2070
Not sure about that.

Well I personally look forward to living to see the date of at least the T1 retirement (the TR retirement should happen in the 2040s, which isn't quite as soon yet, but still well within my natural life expectancy, I'd be in my late 40s by then), and it's absolutely maddening that no matter how many years pass, they always keep trying to push this date further & further out of sight so it always remains "a decade away from being a decade away" (it's been that way for over the past decade). Not to mention all hell breaking loose in the world always keeping me on edge about whether we'd live to see tomorrow, never mind next year let alone another 5–10 years. Having to take it 1 day at a time would sure make the next 5–10 years seem painfully slow. 🙄

To be clear, the tunneling construction has started. The station construction or at least preliminary work wont start till 2027 when the alliance agreement is signed. 2 years until actual excavation happens in 2029
by that time tunneling should be done. hopefully lol

I wouldnt expect in service until late 2030's probably 2040

wow, 2040, guess I will have to take the 91 to finch for the next 3 years of law school, many years ago I was hopeful that by the time I reached this point of my life the extension would be built

2040 seems a long time for just a 5 station extension. Even the official target date of 2035 seems cautious, for a change.
On the other hand, I wouldn't be shocked if the Ontario Line, currently with target date of 2031, doesn't open until 2040.

Curious, when do you see the SSE opening?

We are talking 2035 or 2040 and yet, it took 6 years to complete the entire subway system in Doha with some stns having platform screen doors i might add. Construction began in 2013 and opened in May 2019. Official opening of Phase 1 included 3 subway lines (Red, Green, and Gold Lines). It included 76 km of track, 37 stations, built largely underground using 21 tunnel‑boring machines.
I know, different types rules and governance, but this tells you what is possible. And it tells you how far we slipped when talk of 2035 or 2040.

TBF you're competing with slave labour and no safety

I know the stories. Of course health and safety should be first and foremost but some where there must be middle ground between the situation in the Gulf states and what we are experiencing here where we are talking 15 years to complete a three stop subway extension. By the way, i could be wrong but the stories of death that i heard about were in stadiums construction.
