Sorely needed. Going through the narrow Ontario Line construction hoarding isn't a fun experience.

The CF people are on this forum, huh? The previously narrow sidewalk along the hoarding has been widened, making the route to the Queen Street doors much nicer. This is also the first unimpeded view of 2 Queen West. When its own construction scaffolding was taken down, the Ontario Line hoarding was pressed up closely against it. Tonight:

Here's the new entrance:

It's a fairly narrow hallway, here's a mockup of how it might look:

Nope. It’s temporary.

@Tuscani01 while this may be temporary, a lot of detail went into it that feels like they intend to keep it. They applied the finishing materials used on all the other doors. While it won't be a primary entrance, it could remain as a service exit.

Fantastic because that narrow walkway on Queen was miserable.

It really was. It was single file only, dark and strewn with trash. Not only have they widened it, they're now installing proper hoarding which will have vinyl signage and lighting. This was supposed to be up until 2027 at the latest but now it looks like it'll be like this until at least 2029 or later. So it helps to feel a little bit less of a construction site.

Over on the west side, the walk from Bay Street is just as miserable. There's a chance they might re-open parts of Queen Street under the bridge to pedestrian traffic because one of the upcoming steps listed by the Metrolinx Liaison Office is installing a "platform deck" over the excavation site.

it's blank drywall walls. Looks temporary to me.

Agreed.

This entrance was likely a fire code requirement given that the main Queen Street entrance has restricted access. They were probably required to put it in while the Queen Street entrance is so close to the Ontario Line construction site.

For a mall of that size, they need to meet certain expectations in terms of evacuation. They need to be able to safely clear out the mall in a reasonable amount of time otherwise they can be fined.

I suspect once the construction is done up they will close this entrance.

FHC between double doors? Strange.

Fire Code requirements did change on January 1st so it stands to reason they put this there for that purpose.

The only thing I can think of is that the FDC was originally there in that location. It is also easier to leave it in place than it is to relocate it, especially for something temporary.

Update: it's open

That's exactly it. It's not a coincidence that both this exit was opened and the Queen Street sidewalk was widened at the same time. I could only imagine a rush of people running out of the Queen doors in an emergency and trampling over each other, pushing the fences and falling into the Ontario Line pit because they wouldn't be able to exit single file by the hundreds along the sidewalk in a rush.

I suspect once the construction is done up they will close this entrance.

Honestly, the corridor looks both temporary and permanent. The ceiling was built with care and the floor tiling was laid to define the corridor. The 2 units south of the corridor were redemised into one (about 7,000 sq/ft) which I cant imagine will be easily undone if a tenant takes the space. That new store could open glass walls onto the corridor which would make it feel more woven into the mall.

Final thought: it's good to see the huge span of closed off space on Yonge Street broken up. It would be nice if the new unit does the same and opens its doors. Once 2 Queen West is occupied, the Yonge side of Eaton Centre will begin to feel more like a retail street.

This section needs work though:
