    General railway discussions

I don't usually post videos, but for a general interest channel I thought this one got things generally quite right. At least interesting to see this topic reach a wider audience

    VIA Rail

It's probably more accurate to compare someone riding in a sleeper cabin to someone renting an RV to drive cross the country. The GHG emissions of someone in economy is less than what you'd get flying or driving (a car) and the emissions of someone in a sleeper are likely less than in an RV. I...

Yup. Well it's definetly the logo from the Charlevoix train, although the actual coaches in my photo look different than the photos I can find online (the ones I saw have their logo quite large and in white instead of the smaller yellow logo). I wonder when they may go into service.

Uploading it wasn't working, but it looks like copying and pasting did. The logo on it looks like the Charlevoix train in this image as Brian on the VIA discord pointed out https://charlevoixquebec.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/the-railway-car_24761.jpg EDIT: Finally founds something. Looks like...

I saw these in the CN Kamloops yard last week when taking VIA from Jasper to Vancouver. Apparently they're from the Charlevoix train in Quebec. Any idea what they're doing way over in Kamloops?

    VIA Rail

A VIA staff member refered to the bar/lounge/dome car as a "canteen" when I was on the Candian (in economy) a few years ago and I was confused by what he meant (he had to clarify that he meant the snack car and not the restaurant car). I will say that the food offered in the "canteen" is...

    VIA Rail

It is on the opposite side of the river from the highway in many places. There are some very small communities without any road access (e.g. Dorreen and Bend), one community with only a seasonal ferry service (e.g. Usk), and a few with only a rough gravel road for access (e.g. Penny). DownieLive...

Thanks! Hope to see those departues (and PDF schedules) come back. Mostly just happy to see things getting fully back on track coast to coast for next summer

    VIA Rail

Great to see they're commited to a full return to service! I wonder if the full service on The Canadian includes those additional Edmonton-Vancouver trips (were those train 3 and 4?). I was trying to figure out what days service would be between Vancouver and Jasper for next summer and the...

    VIA Rail

I think we'll have to see how this unfolds over the coming years. Lower demand for commuter rail is certainly possible, but so is increased demand in the long run. With people being able to work from home a few days a week, many might move further out to find cheaper housing, but will still need...

    VIA Rail

I can't imagine that Transport Canada would make up safety regulations for VIA just so they could make their recent purchase be more politically acceptable by forcing the LRCs of the tracks. Maybe I'm naive, but I feel that there is a bit of a firewall between those who make safety regulations...

    VIA Rail

https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/greyhound-canada-1.6025276 Wonder what impact, if any, this will have on VIA's corridor services. I suspect almost all Greyhound passengers will move to other bus services, but I can also see it helping ridership for VIA in post-pandemic southern Ontario/Quebec

Would the missing link also have allowed some CP trains to use the CN line to by-pass Toronto freeing up part of the Milton like for all-day service? Or was it focused only on CN trains?

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

Ya the loss of the bridge across the harbour is too bad, but it actually means the track only ends 300 metres west of its previous terminus; most of downtown Victoria is still within a 5-15 minute walk of the current end of track. Some studies done prior to the removal of the bridge recommended...
