    Ontario Northland/Northern Ontario Transportation

This is one passenger rail project that I've been hesitant to write about in my Northern Tracks columns. One the one hand, I don't believe highway access should be the sole barometer in determining whether or not to preserve or resume a passenger train. Even with the TransCanada and secondary...

There are a few other local service boards: Heyden (N/A), Jogues (214) and Searchmont (445), but as you said previously with Hawk Jct & Dubreuilville, they are connected by the provincial highway system. There are no First Nations communities directly situated on the line, though Michipicoten FN...

Spot on, and I can't stress this enough. More passengers is a good problem to have. It means that the government and Ontario Northland will have to expand the scope of the service, which means better service and increased seating capacity. Perhaps even warranting a second train in the future (at...

For the first time since the end of January, the Sudbury-White River train completed a round trip journey. As stated by VIA Rail, the baggage car remains out of service. Hoping for all affected passengers that this train remains reliable for the foreseeable future.

On paper, a train to Sault-Ste-Marie makes sense. There are several small and midsized communities (for Northern Ontario) along the route. A large city at each end of the Huron Central. In practice though, the line isn't even close to being passenger rail ready. An article from 2020 revealed...

It appears VIA Rail & the Feds may have a different set of criteria now regarding rural/remote services, at least according to their report to Parliament in 2024-2025. www.viarail.ca/sites/all/files/media/pdfs/access-to-information/ANNUAL%20REPORT%20ATI%202024-2025_FINAL_COMPLETE.pdf#page=4 In...

I'm going by what a spokesperson from the MTO responded to me via email. I don't know anything else.
