"Metrolinx’s $27B GO Expansion delayed and scaled back: confidential report"

Is this that timeline from last year?

Just about to make a post on this, can't say I'm surprised... Culture of procrastination and all.

EDIT: And yes the article seems rehash the Trillium article from last year. That article cited slides from Oct. 2024... This isn't new news. But the Toronto Star couldn't cover it before an FOI request came through.

A good read above from @atakagi1

Yes.

And when you look at it you can't help but feel contempt for Phil Verster and the senior Mx team and their board.

Its not merely the delay or scaling back of electrification; though certainly, that's significant and unfortunate.

Its that signal work in the USRC wont' be complete until 2037! . And track work in the LSE Corridor is ongoing through 2035. SMH, who is anyone trying to fool? Its not a matter of hitting construction times comparable to China. Nor even 1/2 that.

Its taking projects that were promised to be substantially complete as early as 2024, and delivering them up to 14 years later. Its taking project components that are straight forward (like track) that involve no novel technology, and could, even in 2 or 3 phases, be delivered in a maximum of six years (I'd argue for 3 for any given line) ....and managing to stretch that time line by a factor of 3 (after a delayed start to construction).

This is a choice by unmotivated management; and by politicians who clearly don't view anything here as a legacy project, and most will be deceased (of old age) by the time its delivered.

Sadly, ML has become a Photo Op factory that builds and runs trains in its spare time.

The telling comment for me was when the 401 tunnels were cited by the ML spokesperson as a sign of progress being made. They are a stranded asset that was paid off years ago and still are not in operation. The sequencing of work on ML projects is fundamentally incompetent.

And the Ready, Aim, Aim, Aim..... approach to project scope is also deplorable.

And then there's procurement.....

Somebody needs to remind ML that these projects are not hobby farms.... they are a commitment to the taxpayers who need mobility.

The sad part is no one is going to do anything about it. Nothing is going to change...

Is Thug even aware of this? He always seems to get outraged by government inefficiency...

I hope the oppositions question them in the parliament on this...
Here's roughly how it would go

Opposition MPP: What does this goverment say for how Metrolinx projects balloon in cost and are so late to be delivered? Premier, how do you explain to the public how Metrolinx has been fraught with mismanagement?
Transportation Minister: The previous liberal government ignored the people for years and decades but we're amazing and everyone loves daddy Ford and we build build build. Did I mention we’re getting shovels in the ground?? Also btw the NDP are the devil and would ruin the province hehe 😋

I'm being faceatious but it's inspired from what's in hansard. At least at City Council the councillors can ask bureaucrats questions and the public has access to answers, even if it gets silly at times. The circus at Queen's Park is on another level. "Question Period" is a total joke with endless pontificating and posturing. "It's not called answer period" describes it well.

Nothing new in that article but just more sad confirmation of what we already know.

The ultimate shame is that torontonians don't even understand how transformative electrification done right could be.

For instance, I'm currently in the netherlands and took a train from schiphol to the centrum of a small city of 80,000. About 70km in 44 min and that is WITH idling at some stations for 3 min in between.

Go transit does oshawa to union station..50km in 1h.

but no, you see, building a bridge over a small creek is such an immeasurably complicated task that it takes multiple generations of workers, design, and negotiations in order to complete!
**Big upgrades** to the small creek construction zone on the April 11-12 closure. A few more concrete blocks will be placed to hold the signal mast in place south of Agincourt. /s

What type of construction work is happening?

During the closure, crews are conducting necessary maintenance on retaining walls within the rail corridor to ensure the infrastructure that supports service along the Stouffville line remains safe and reliable.

We thank you for your patience during this disruption.

While it was previously mentioned in this thread, the LSE line is seeing more material projects being completed during the major track closure.

What type of construction work is happening?

During the closure, crews are conducting track improvements as part of GO Expansion including installing crossover switches, new track panels, replacing ballast, track surfacing, track drainage, welding and destressing. The closure also allows us to make progress on the future Ontario Line subway, with crews carrying out necessary utility work in Toronto’s east end.

What are they doing? It looks pretty much finished to me ... even the boardwalk on the north has been reinstated, and I see no fences - including no silt fences - in the south side. I should walk along that new boardwalk.
