GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Did VIA use that platform before moving to Aldershot when it opened in 1992? That's too far back for my recollection.
Yes, but only for a couple of years. They had been using the old station at Burlington West - just west of the current station, at the junction with the Halton Sub - until 1988 or so.

A nod to Nolan Xuereb who has another good piece on transit in Toronto asking whatever happened to the Oriole GO relocation.

Another metrolinx bait and switch exercise.
They fooled us with the push for electrification that so far is leading to nowhere and their grandiose plans at expansion is also very very delayed

I second my compliment of Nolan's article quality.

As for whether this gets done, given the price tag we've seen on other projects, on a line that's on the back-burner, this seems dead in the water for now.

PLus, between flooding in the Lower Don Valley, Alto and the whole "GO 2.0" concept, I think the whole line needs a rethink.

Furthermore the pedestrian permeability in Hamilton is relatively decent via legal crossing routes. There are a few stretches where a pedestrian bridge/underpass may be warranted but for the most part it seems reasonable to construct more serious trespasser deterrents.

Currently CN doesn't seem to be making any serious attempt to discourage trespassing. There are many spots with well-trodden paths across the railway, not because people are cutting fences, but because there was never a fence to begin with:

CN has always been pretty laissez-faire about that stretch. Nothing’s really been done down there in decades (if ever) to close things up and I doubt they’re going to start now since their trains are usually crawling through there anyway going in and out of the yards. From their perspective the risk of a collision or trespasser incident is generally much lower than for GO.

If anything’s going to change, it’ll probably have to come from MX stepping up, paying for the improvements and then maintaining them going forward. Maybe that didn’t make much sense before when there weren’t that many train movements, but these days it really should be on the agenda sooner rather than later.

But even if they do restrict access, it’ll take a long time to break the habits of the people living down there who treat the ROW like their backyard. The stuff you run into down there is unreal sometimes. I’ve had people throw grocery carts onto the track right in front of me, which ended up braking a hosebag and causing the train to go into emergency, that was NOT a fun repair job. And then there was another time I came through there on the way to Niagara only to come across dumb and dumber - a pair of guys who had literally set up what I can only call a bike repair shop right in the middle of the track. Bikes flipped upside down, half taken apart, tools and parts strewn about everywhere. The bastards saw us coming from a mile away and didn't even flinch(we were going slow). Even when we were literally right on top of them stopped mere feet away they still refused to move because we had come down the "wrong track" the RTC had put us on the north (non-main) track past Hamilton and GO trains "aren’t supposed to be there." 🤦‍♂️ Took several minutes of blasting them with the Stage 2 horn before they angrily dragged their junk off the damn right-of way.

So even with fences and the anti-trespasser mats I'm sure they'll still be coming through for some time what with all the grade crossings that are down there, but it's a start.

What happened to those biweekly reports Metrolinx was doing for this corridor? Can't seem to find them on the website.

Taken 13 March. Nothing new but the store is empty again and needs to go before further excavation. Also it’s worth coming here just to get a sense of the development coming which is considerable and only getting started!
