Toronto BMO Field Renovations | ?m | ?s | MLSE | Gensler

Thanks for these.

I think there was a question here awhile back about the seats being replaced. Looks like they have started to do that.
Yes, that was my question. I actually asked twice LOL. So, are they replacing all the seats with grey ones like in the renderings I have seen?

I'm hoping they will be red.

In the 2 photos kotsy uploaded it's obvious seats have been removed from the 100 level on both the East and West sides of the stadium.

Maybe they won't replace the 200 level seats on the East side as those seats are newer and they don't mention any sponsors.

I'm sure they'll have to swap out the BMO seats (and any other non-Fifa approved branding)

I'm curious as to the extent FIFA will require the removal of BMO and other non-FIFA sponsor branding from the stadium. I recall that during the 2010 Winter Olympics, Rogers Arena in Vancouver was renamed "Canada Hockey Place" for the duration of the games, but the big corporate signage on the exterior of the arena was still visible (I believe it was still General Motors Place at the time).

I think I have seen renderings with all grey seats but I could be mistaken. I will say this, they have a lot of work to do at the north end to be ready for June!

Supposedly they want to be ready by end of March in order to host some big friendlies as a World Cup warm up games.

I've seen France and Belgium as possible opponents for Canada

Well we know it's going to be called Toronto Stadium during the World Cup

I will say this, the north end construction will go a long way to giving the stadium a more completed and closed in feel. With the new CFL dimensions coming, the north end retractable seats may be left in position more "permanently"

This is what happened with branding at BMO Field for the 2014 Women's U20 World Cup. All non FIFA approved Brand logos were covered (including on the little urinal toys!). I suspect they will be more thorough at the 2026 WC.

FIFA are less strict than the IOC, who IIRC have had stories in the past of going after businesses with "Olympic" in their name in host cities. I think there was a pizza place in Vancouver that was approached by the IOC in their leadup?

How we got Toronto as a host is unreal, we are lucky USA didn't realize they should have hosted on their own. Arguing about who is paying, complaining from everyone at city hall and now putting up scaffold stands next to a dirty parking lot. Hope this turns out ok.

I'm unsure whether to post this here or in the Olivia Chow's Toronto thread. Excerpt plus map (behind paywall)

World Cup contracts turn Toronto and Vancouver bylaw staff into FIFA’s brand police

Context not in the article is this is in effect during the time Toronto hosts games, plus a day on each end, so June 11 to July 3.

I think it will turn out ok for Toronto.

To me the bigger fail is that we don't have Montreal involved. But their stadium situation is much worse.

You are right that the US could have hosted on its own. And I do think they included Canada and Mexico to make sure there were no competing bids.

But it does appear that joint hosting is the way of the future. The 2030 World Cup has 6 hosts over 3 continents.
