I’m glad to see this posted. Always good to be aware and like yourself, hoping for rain to offset any fire risk.

We rented a cottage in the Kawarthas, not far from one of the fires. Water bombers sent from Sudbury were picking up water in the lake we are on for two days. Quite a sight, which is something I’d never seen in southern Ontario.

OT re Toronto politics for sure, but the discussion had touched on the current fire risk, which is quite unusual for southern Ontario. Hopefully today’s rain makes a dent in it.

I’d think the proximity to Toronto is problematic plus the smoke. It’s too close for comfort.

A wind storm?

Only if it has a LOT of rain accompanying it.

Thunderstorms could help but not lightning strikes.

Derechos are known to pack hurricane force winds and rain into a very short period

Not sure I’ve ever heard of fire risk in cottage country before as well.

Up near Saugeen Shores, regular fire bans and risk warning signs have been a thing for at least the last 15 years.

Maybe not so bad but my point was we urgently need alot of rain.

I've been caught driving in a derecho and it wasn't ideal but if it passes quickly it may actually have more benefit than harm.

You want rainfall over time, so the ground has time to absorb it. When the ground is dry, an intense rainfall will just run off and contribute to flooding.

Last time Ontario saw a derecho, my parents were without power for seven days (near Ottawa) and a large swath of trees from Stoufville to Ottawa was completely decimated.
