In many major cities in the USA They employ a zipper lane Zipper lane To widen a highway without adding lanes overall. I was thinking specifically the DVP and Gardiner, due to their natural flow for commuting whether this could work, and if it could, why has it not been invested in yet?

They absolutely should’ve tried it.
But in this city? Please. The powers that be in the city would rather let traffic grind to a halt than risk being seen as supporting car culture. Just give it a few moments and someone will pop in with the 'ol induced demand argument like it’s a mic drop, and that’ll be the end of the discussion for them.

They could make them HOV lanes. That might have appeased the non car culture group.

When they rebuilt the elevated section what they should have done is added an HOV lane in each direction, it was the perfectly opportunity to do it but now that ship has sailed. Still, could definitely give the zipper HOV idea a try.

Do you know of any studies to do it on those highways?
