To minimize disruption of the pipe yard, I suppose. Presumably the investigation area has it’s own entry point for staff access and delivery of drilling equipment.

But how would that help them build a WYE? I don't understand.

Not at all. Compare it to the existing wye on the south side of the mainline, which VIA uses daily. A radius of 120 m is plenty for a slow speed wye.

The point, however, is that the design of the switchyard for electrification may or may not leave room for a wye to be added. So the wye may have been a red herring all along.

So, in all seriousness, was there ever a wye at this location previously? If not, was the pipe yard ever railroad property?

It would be nice for Milton Line trains to be able to serve Exhibition for special events. I wonder if it might be worth expropriating a couple of the parcels next to the pipe yard to make room for a wye if electrification doesn't leave room for it on the pipe yard property.

The benefits are dubious, though, because if you wyed at Kipling, you end up bypassing Kipling station altogether. To serve Kipling, you'd have to reverse directions after running up the Obico sub.

N.B. Most of the trackage in the Kipling wye appears to no longer exist, according to Google's satellite imagery. I don't know if it's been reinstalled, because the Kipling terminal is still under construction in the satellite view.

I’m sure plans still call for VIA to use Canpa in the future, a wye on one end would be necessary but it would be operationally simpler to have wyes on both.

This was going to be my guess, judging by the investigation area. If they were investigating a wye, the work are would...look like a wye.

For that reason I included this fine print from below the diagram in my screenshot:

Geotechnical investigations will proceed in stages, occupying one working area at a time.

Otherwise yes, I could have ruled it out.
