Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

I'm not convinced we can pinpoint the trucker protests as the reason for Doug wanting to reopen the province. This seems like something that would have happened regardless of the protest circumstances.

There was a plan in place for reopening (ignored by the protestors of course). Doug accelerated that plan.

He is trying to play it both ways - not nearly as blatantly as AB/SK given the innate cautiousness of our electorate, and the broad acceptance of pandemic measures in general.

Last I checked, the Ontario government has jurisdiction in Ottawa, Ontario.
It was the Ontario legislature, under Doug's mentor, Mike Harris, in 1999 that set up the 2001 amalgamation of the former Region of Ottawa-Carleton, the former cities of Ottawa, Nepean, Kanata, Gloucester, Vanier and Cumberland, the former townships of West Carleton, Goulbourn, Rideau, and Osgoode, and the former village of Rockcliffe Park into the new City of Ottawa.

... and your point is??

The end of plate-renewal stickers and fees is being formally announced at this hour by the Premier, as was telegraphed.

Official Presser here:

Of note, car-owners will still have to renew their plates every one to two years, just no fee, no sticker.

The rationale is proof-of-insurance, and that the province hasn't found a better way to enforce outstanding 407 tolls.

They are also refunding fees paid back to March 2020. Ridiculous. But some people will fall for the “looking out for the little guy” election speeches

Virtual proof-of-insurance is available. What about virtual vehicle registration and virtual driver's license?

Ontario digital ID program delayed until 2022

From link.

“As I’m sure you can appreciate, the priority and resources in the Associate Ministry of Digital Government had to shift to support the Ministry of Health’s pandemic response, specifically with the successful release of the Verify Ontario app for businesses which makes it easier to confirm people have been vaccinated while protecting their privacy,” Amanda Brodhagen said in a statement.

“We want to get DI right and ensure that privacy and security continue to be a top priority. More details on the launch of the DI initiative, including timing and specifics, will be announced in 2022.”
We're still waiting.
