Mayor John Tory's Toronto

I don't think the big tech companies need to be broken up necessarily. They should be forced to remove barriers to interoperability and stopped from abusing their market dominance (such as in-app payments).

Nor do I, but they certainly do need better (and more restrictive) regulation. Ideally, companies found to be problematic should be burdened with both a government and independent "fairness council" seat on the board of representatives. The council would be an odd-numbered group of private, part-time individuals with no immediate links to the company meant to offer an outside voice on privacy, acquisition and fair competition.

Agenda item for General Government & Licencing Committee 4 January. Sounds like a good question to me!!

Recommendations
Councillor Ainslie recommends that:

1. The Executive Director, Municipal Licensing and Standards report to the March 29, 2021 General Government and Licensing Committee meeting on the issue of how a business establishment such as Adamson Barbecue is permitted to operate without a business license.
Summary
In light of the establishments contravention of the Province of Ontario’s lockdown regulation under the Reopening Ontario Act (ROA), that prohibits indoor and outdoor dining it has been highlighted that the establishment was also operating without a business license.

The City of Toronto supports business and is mandated to protect residents. As such there are regulations that all businesses must adhere to, including issued by the Toronto Public health Food safety program and other measures to ensure that business are operating safely and following regulations.

It is important that the Executive Director to Municipal Licensing and Standards speaks on this issue to offer an explanation on how establishments can remain open without a business license.

The Toronto Police Operating Budget submission for 2021 is a flat-line; that is to say a 0% increase has been requested.

This may not please the defunding activists, but I see it as quite promising.

Savings achieved this budget result from eliminated 140 positions, 50 officers and 90 civilians.

They can save face by saying "we defunded the annual budget increase". Progress!

The City Budget has dropped:

The proposed property tax increase is only 0.7%; that is almost certainly below inflation, even this year.

Have a look at this chart from the City Budget presentation, it suggests there is certainly room for a larger increase:

The budget is mostly status-quo, with some very minor investments in terms of access to the low-income TTC pass, and eliminating overdue library fines for children.

I like this Gord Perks quip on the budget:

You know, I begrudgingly have to agree with him here.

Except, of course, it being Perks, he'd love to just shove his hand in my wallet and take the proceeds for whatever socialist lala-land thing he's come up with now and damn the consequences of me, a working man, being able to pay my own bills.

I really dislike the man.

In fact, the only thing I like about him is that he smokes. And you can read into that however you like. ;)

Gord is a grandstander.

LOL

I've known him (not well, just passing acquaintances if that) for....ugh.........more than 2 decades.........has it been 3?

But that doesn't mean he doesn't make a fair few good points.

He's never been all that good though at translating his ideas into policy.

I'm a pragmatist.

Its not about the process, its about the result.

Don't just shame the bad guy; get him to agree to your idea if you need his vote.

There's where Gord falls short to me.

He straight to my face went off on how people who make middle incomes need to pay up so that bums (paraphrasing here!) can get their entitlements because "life is hard in this town" at my door during the last election.

As I'm there looking at him, in my overpriced rental flat, with my debts, and my taxes all paid up with not entitlements accrued ever, and my quite literally back-breaking job....

He can sod off. And stay sodded.

He's just like Denzil Minnan-Wong just with a different ideological mental block.
