Starbucks

Something I've discussed w/industry professionals is that you don't want your store to mimic other stores/brands too closely.

It diminishes loyalty.

If people want a coffee while buying their groceries............they are weird............but you should sell them one anyway; but you should have an exclusive arrangement with a regional chain, and/or do your own.
Add Longos to the list of grocers who have Starbucks kiosks in the stores

Indeed; and one peril of that is that when Longos introduced a signature Biscotti product, which was actually quite good; you couldn't get it w/your coffee in store.

That product was later discontinued.

Shame. I liked that location when I worked at Loblaws.

Yeah, it was inside a nicer old building and the main coffee option for quite a distance. Not necessarily a high density area, but I thought the store was reasonably frequented by people in the Seaton Village, Christie Pits and areas north of the CP railway.

Not sure if these were already mentioned, but the former Starbucks locations at: Yonge & Lawrence, Yonge & Rosehill (south of St. Clair), and King & Dufferin are all closed.

Hopefully quality indies/small chains like Balzac's and Dark Horse make it through this, maybe they can snap up some prime locations if they do; and/or a few true independents can open their first locations at better rents that were previously available.

I expect, in the aggregate, moms and pops are being hit much harder than large chains.

But for those that can struggle through another few months; there should be opportunities in retail.

It would be wonderful if McDs were permanently shrunk by 1/3 in favour of indy retail and/or better quality chains like South Street or Big Smoke.

Dark Horse is also closing some locations most notably on John Street.

Starbucks says closure of up to 300 stores in Canada to be completed by end of March

Jan 12, 2021

Starbucks says its plan to close up to 300 coffee shops across Canada will be complete by the end of March.

The Seattle-based coffeehouse and roastery chain announced the acceleration of its five-year “transformation strategy” last year as it responded to changes in consumer habits during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement on Tuesday, the company says some of its locations closed last fall and it expects to complete its planned store closures by the end of its second quarter.

The restructuring includes adding new drive thru locations, the expansion of delivery and a pilot of curbside pick-up only coffee shops.

The company began experimenting with pick-up only locations before the pandemic. The first Canadian Starbucks store using the new format, which measured 93 square metres or 1,000 square feet, launched in Toronto's financial district last January.

Starbucks says the changes will help the coffee chain “best meet our customers where they are now.”

The company had previously said it would close up to 200 of its locations in Canada over two years.

Yorkdale has three Starbucks locations: one in Indigo, one across from the Samsung Store, and one next to the washroom corridor between the Nissan Studio (former Microsoft Store) and the Bay.

It's not like Springfield Mall though:

Scarborough Town Centre had two until August when the closed the original location. Now it is back to 1 Starbucks and 2 Tims

Even Sherway has 3... mall, indigo and 1 across the street in the plaza. I am sure one of them will close. Surprised they didn't build a DT store and close 2 of them.
