EU citizens can travel across their borders into Switzerland without a passport. Better than traveling between Canada and the United States.

That's what they should have done in the beginning back when Britain was considering to join in the 1970s.

Yes, but the other 27 left in EU do not want to make non-membership attractive so I think any benefits offered to UK will be pretty small.

The whole thing (EU) needs to be renegotiated. The original plan was never to create a multi billion € bureaucracy and central government. The Swedes and Danes might be the next to bail.

It's amazing how to a degree this butterflied from Iraq's Aug 1990 invasion of Kuwait, leading to US and Western deployment and invasions in the region, resulting in renewed islamic terrorism and 9/11, leading to further US and Western invasions and destabilization, resulting in millions of Syrians and others fleeing the region into Europe. Now the Europeans, annoyed with their governments' weak stand on defending their national cultures and protecting their national borders from illegal immigration, are throwing out those governments.

How can the EU Membership Referendum (BRExit) be binding? Shouldn't the Toronto Amalgamation Referendum of 1997 be binding?

Maybe we should have a TORexit Referendum?

The Cornish council has issued a plea for “protection” following the United Kingdom’s vote to leave the European Union. Cornwall, which has a poor economy and as such has received millions of pounds in subsidies from the EU each year for over a decade, voted decisively to Leave.

“In the 2014-2020 budget, Cornwall has been allocated 592 million euros from the EU convergence fund to assist with further development. If Britain leaves the EU before 2020 the government should seriously consider keeping this fund up.”

Maybe they'll feed themselves or relocate to viable areas?

It's a contrast I noticed when living in New Brunswick and frequently traveling to Maine. In New Brunswick, otherwise economically unviable towns are kept in existence because their populations rely on handouts, while in Maine, economically unviable towns are abandoned as their populations seek work and success elsewhere. Perhaps that's the future Cornwall unintentionally chose for itself, one where they retract demographically to a sustainable size.

The EU money was used to improve broadband and infrastructure to make the area more attractive to business. It's not a mere "handout".

They would do well to heed the illustrious history of Europe to go too far down that path. Fundamentally they are dealing with issues that are beyond any single state to resolve - closing themelves off and turning inward only makes everyone weaker in the long run. Plus nationalism have a history of rearing its ugly head on that continent, and we all knew the end result of that last century.
