After another productive year of city building, dozens of notable new additions have been completed in the Greater Toronto Area in 2016. Ranging from low-density boutique condominium developments all the way up to major office towers, we have tracked 40 building completions over the past 12 months, and now it's up to you, UrbanToronto's dedicated readership, to pick your favourites.
For our third annual best buildings poll, we have grouped the city's newest completed residential and commercial buildings into three categories based on their heights, with categories for 20 to 51 metre-high buildings, 51 to 105 metre-high buildings, and 105 to 200 metre-high buildings.
TALL: 105-200 metres
Our "TALL" category gives you the choice to select from the 14 tallest buildings completed this year, ranging from 105 to 200 metres in height. The tallest building completed this year was the 44-storey Bay Adelaide Centre East Tower, which rises 196 metres in the Financial District. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the shortest building in this category is Minto 30Roe Condos, a 34-storey condominium tower standing 113 metres above Roehampton Avenue, near the busy corner of Yonge and Eglinton.
TALL-ish: 53-105 metres
Our "TALL-ish" category highlights the 14 mid-range towers completed this year, with heights ranging between 53 and 105 metres. The tallest building in this category is the 32-storey 1ThousandBay Condos in Toronto's Bay Cloverhill area, with a height of 104.74 metres, while the shortest in this category is the 15-storey The College Condominium, which rises 53 metres above College west of Spadina.
WELL GROUNDED: 20-53 metres
While they may not inspire quite the degree of attention that the skyscraping projects of the taller categories get, our "WELL GROUNDED" category covers the 12 completed buildings with heights that ranging between 20 and 53 metres. This category's tallest entry is the 13-storey Local at Fort York, standing 52.4 metres above the Fort York neighbourhood, about the upper limit of what we consider mid-rise now. The shortest entry in this (and all) categories is the 7-storey Twenty Condos on Gladstone Avenue, just north of Queen Street. At a height of just 21.6 metres, this project is part of a block-long Carnaby redevelopment by Streetcar Developments, with multiple buildings lining a new pedestrian mews.
