Following last month's much-publicized announcement of the Gupta Group's 52-storey Rosedale on Bloor tower, further details regarding the project have continued to emerge. The redesigned Page + Steele / IBI Group tower at 401 Bloor Street East, just west of Sherbourne, will—as the renderings indicated—feature a Canopy by Hilton hotel. In addition, we now know that the building will feature 476 residential suites ranging in size from 307 to 871 square feet, and will feature interiors by Alessandro Munge of Studio Munge, as well as landscaping by NAK Design Strategies.

The residential suite interiors will be appointed with quartz countertops and porcelain backsplashes in the kitchens (a textural motif carried through the the bathrooms), as well as stainless steel appliances. The living areas will look out over the Downtown skyline to the south and the Rosedale's rich arboreal canopy to the north.

The condominium and hotel will feature separate entrances and lobbies, but will share a communal pool (above), bringing down maintenance costs for condo residents. In terms of amenities, the condominium will include a chef's kitchen and dining room for entertaining, as well as a lounge and meeting facilities aimed at residents with home-based businesses.

While a proposal for redevelopment of the site first came to light in 2013, the re-design is most notable for its overhauled lobby (above) as well as a newly slimmed down and less symmetrical, but more kinetically energized tower. The new design is characterized by a more modern aesthetic, while the previously all-glass podium has been augmented with stone framing (below), which will house the hotel lobby.

The new Canopy by Hilton hotel will be the first of its kind in Canada, introducing the more family-oriented Canopy brand to Toronto. The 4-star hotel will bring luxurious amenities and conveniences to both guests and residences, while the influx of visitors and tourists is likely to bring new vibrancy to the street.
