It has been a few months since our last visit to the site of BazisMetropia and RioCan's E Condos, a Rosario Varacalli-designed two-tower condominium development gearing up to transform the northeast corner of Yonge and Eglinton. When we last checked in on the site's progress, demolition was under way on the storefronts occupying the development's Yonge Street frontage, a walkup apartment building at 25 Roehampton, and a former Burger King location on Eglinton just east of Yonge. In the time since, shoring of the site and demolition of the only remaining building, a TD Bank branch occupying the northeast corner of Yonge and Eglinton, have both commenced as well.

As of this morning, all windows had been removed from the TD Bank branch, and work was getting started on the demolition of the building's structural elements. Like many of the demolitions we have seen in Toronto in recent years, the work here is being done with a hydraulic breaker, which quickly and easily chews apart small to medium-sized buildings, creating much less dust and airborne debris than heavier methods like wrecking balls and implosions.

Most recently it was learned that an adjacent walkup apartment building at 31 Roehampton has now been added to the land for E Condos development.

The acquisition of the new property led to an application to increase the number of units and total floor area for the overall development, which was approved by the City of Toronto's Committee of Adjustment this month. Plans for the north tower on the property will redesigned to include the enlarged footprint of the site.

UrbanToronto will be keeping a close eye out for the new north tower design when it appears in the coming months. For now, additional information and renderings can be found in our E Condos dataBase file, linked below. Want to get involved in the discussion?
