Insurance company Aviva Canada will be moving from Scarborough in 2017 to a new office building in Downtown Markham, a multi-year 243-acre project by The Remington Group to bring a vibrant, walkable downtown to the fast-growing city to the northeast of Toronto.

The 12-storey, 350,000 square foot building on Birchmount Avenue just to the north of Highway 407 will be mostly taken by Aviva, while other square footage remains to be leased in the building. Designed by Quadrangle Architects, the building is being targeted to achieve LEED Silver certification.

Remington and Quadrangle are the developers and master planners of the entire area, currently the largest multi-phase private development in Canada. Hundreds of units of condominium suites and townhomes have been completed in the development over the past few years, while Honeywell and Motorola already make their home in the area. The Cineplex below is already under construction, to open later this year, while extensive shopping and further office space is coming soon. Remington is currently working on Signature Condominiums and a Marriott Hotel at the centre of the district. A folk-art carousel has been chosen as the focal point for the area, and another story features on UrbanToronto about it.
