Toronto's former Stock Exchange building on Bay Street is home to the Design Exchange, one of Canada's premier design museums. This Friday, November 16, the DX is playing host to 20 of the country's most intriguing deisgners, thinkers and celebrities, from a variety of backgrounds, who have been challenged to do what they do best for a cause. The participants were given a budget of $500 and were expected to purchase a variety of materials to deconstruct and revamp into unique creations. In partnership with IKEA, the Design Exchange plans to hold a silent auction to benefit the DX's youth programs and design preservation initiatives.

The Exhibit hopes to showcase pieces that are not just aesthetically pleasing but also funtional, featuring everything from interactive table tops that derive inspiration from our cultural history or music to revamped bamboo and metal lighting fixtures. In a city that is quite often enthralled with the debate over urban design, it will be interesting to see what some people are doing on a smaller scale.
