The history of 1 Spadina Crescent reflects the metamorphosis Toronto has undergone over the past century and a quarter, with the building dating back to the late 1800's. Originally constructed on the outskirts of town as a Presbyterian college, it was subsequently home to a barracks and military hospital during the first World War, a medical laboratory during the middle of the 20th century and now serves as studio space for a number of departments within the University of Toronto. The building's prime location at the north end of Spadina Avenue makes it a go-to landmark for many photographers. Battles within the university over who can use the building and a series of unsuccessful attempts to expand on it - as well as some unfortunate renovations at the rear - have failed to see the building used to its full potential. While some ambitious designs have been floating around for the reuse and integration of the building into its surrounding environment, it looks like we'll have to wait a while longer before any come to fruition.
