U of T: Munk School of Global Affairs (Bloor & Devonshire, KPMB) COMPLETE

I don't mind the contextualism of KPMB's project, though it's not quite historicism, more of a modern take on the original design to my eyes. I might be describing a bit of a fine line here, but I'm referring to additions that merely attempt to mimic the original structure and result in a cheap Disney-esque recreation.

It's true that quasi-historicism can be very undesirable for neither being rooted in the past in a convincing way nor doing something contemporary and trying to forge new ground.

Oxford - citing another university town - has structures by two architects who worked mostly in the Baroque spirit: Wren's Tom Tower ( a post-Gothic era "goth" addition to a gothic building ) and Hawksmoor's "goth" additions to the gothic All Souls. Both are accepted as distinctive takes on an earlier style ... as is Ron Thom's Massey College in our town, which also takes an earlier architectural form and combines it with the contemporary to make something new.

Still doing work here, new signage, fencing, etc.
