Toronto Telus House - 25 York Street | 136.24m | 30s | Menkes | Sweeny &Co

I see all the sites and buildings that you have mentioned, but i am a bit puzzled on what they are building on the site west of 18 York south of the tracks.

They were using this block as the work area for the construction of the Simcoe Street tunnel and last week were in the process of tidying it up. They will presumably move out any day now. The folk at 18 York also appear to be moving onto the eastern part of the site - presumbly also for their trailers etc.

Wow, it's like a whole new neighbourhood that just appeared out of thin air. The silvery cladding of the Telus Tower looks great. I just hope there will be some street activity in this new neighbourhood. It would be great to have a collection of bars, cafes, restaurants, and shops clustered around the ACC.

Took this last night:

Looks like there was an incident at the Telus site tonight. There's currently 7 fire trucks parked on Bremner and York streets, along with several police cars and ambulances, including one of those ambu-buses. Hopefully no one was hurt. Smoke and some brief flames could be seen coming from about the 18th or 19th floor on the south-east portion of the building. The fine folks at Toronto Fire seemed to have it out pretty quickly but here's a few shots I took before that (click for larger):

A fire in a highrise building under construction led to a man falling 20 stories to his death late last night.

Police and fire crews responded to a one-alarm fire at 25 York St., a building that is currently unoccupied. The fire began on the 20th floor just after 11:30 p.m. Flames and smoke were seen coming out of the building when police arrived.

The fire began inside a garbage can, police say. Fire crews quickly extinguished the flames, but stayed on scene until early morning after discovering the body on the ground level of the building.

Police have classified the death as a suspicious incident and the corner's office was called in to help with the investigation.

No other injuries were reported.

The building, located close to York St. and Bremner Blvd., is a 30-story tower that will be the new Toronto home for communications company Telus.

Was this guy part of the crews on site? I wonder if he slipped on a rebar or just decided to jump.

A mystery begins. That's a terrible incident though-- for someone to fall 20 floors to their death. Blah :(

Man dies after falling 25 stories from highrise fire

Toronto police are still trying to identify a man who fell 25 stories to his death during a fire at a construction site overnight.

Emergency officials were called to a highrise at 25 York St., just north of the Gardiner Expressway after witnesses reported seeing flames and smoke coming out of the building around 11:30 p.m.

Police and fire crews found a small blaze coming from a garbage can on the 25th floor, which was quickly extinguished.

But upon further investigation, they discovered a body on the ground floor, said Staff Sgt. Robert Brown.

Brown said the man was dressed like a construction worker and there were pieces of ID on him, however, police are still trying to determine whether the clothes he wore and the items he carried belonged to him.

"In the construction site, there were places where he could have gained access to clothing that had those IDs in them," Brown explained.

"He was dressed like he was actually employed there but the clothing may belong to an employee."

At this point, the fire is still being considered suspicious but Brown thinks once they identify the man, a lot of unanswered questions will be addressed.

Brown said the fire was "consistent with someone using it to warm themselves."

According to a Google listing, the 30-storey tower is the future Toronto home of communications company Telus.

Toronto police are investigating how a construction worker fell 20 storeys to his death Monday night during a fire downtown.

Witnesses reported seeing flames and smoke coming out of a highrise at 25 York St., just north of the Gardiner Expressway, about 11:30 p.m.

Police and fire crews extinguished a small blaze in a garbage can on the 20th floor.

They discovered a body on the ground floor.

The man, in his late 30s and wearing construction clothes, was later identified as a construction worker.

Police did not release his name because his next of kin had not been located, said Staff Sgt. Deb Abbott.

An autopsy was held yesterday morning.

"He died as a result of the fall, but it's still not clear whether he worked at that construction site or next door," she said, adding the death was not being treated as a homicide.

Police said the fire was "consistent with someone using it to warm themselves."

The Ministry of Labour is also investigating the death.

The building, which is usually buzzing with hundreds of workers during the day, was quiet yesterday as yellow tape cordoned off the main entrance and the investigation continued.

Some construction workers told the Star they didn't know who the dead man was.

"We heard about (the death) but there are hundreds of people who work in these buildings," said Dane Schwaff, who works at the construction site next door.

There are at least two major projects under construction at York St. and Bremner Blvd.

The 32-storey tower where the worker fell to his death is the future Toronto home of communications company Telus.

I can't see why they think it would be someone off of Maple Leaf Square. The two buildings have nothing to do with each other, have different general contractors, almost all of the subtrades are different companies, etc.

I wonder if maybe the scenario was something along the lines of the guy not having anywhere else to go, so deciding to hide out in the shack for a couple days while everyone else was on holiday. But if that was the case it doesn't make sense that he would've been lighting fires for warmth when the building would have had electricity and portable heaters everywhere.
