Toronto Spadina Subway Extension Emergency Exits | ?m | 1s | TTC | IBI Group

Oh, and the official terminal name is "SmartCentres Terminal at Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station".
Makes me cringe. It reminds me of the time when Doug Ford wanted to sell the naming rights to subway stations.

Is that really any longer than, say, from the Finch subway to where the buses are? Or Downsview? Or most stations?
They had a "blank slate" within the framework of Smart Centres owning the land; that's how they negotiated the location of the terminal and the name. The name wasn't sold, per se, since they "donated" the land. That said, it's kind of stupid and I hope there won't be penguins on it. But there probably will be. but no one will call it that stupid name any more than people say, "Hey, let's go shopping at CF Toronto Eaton Centre!"

I don't know why they didn't just expropriate (and YR decided to pony up the $ to create an underground transfer, which one would think is laudatory) though I seem to recall it was a decision made relatively late in the game but, the perspective of the photo notwithstanding, I don't know how big a deal that really is especially (as Megaton pointed out) since the Viva terminal is the main transfer point. Of course, you only have to go back a page or two here to see the complaints about that so...pick your poison.

The hoarding separating the tail track at Downsview from the extension was taken down earlier this week. Here's a photo I took a couple of days ago:

You can see the curve from the bored tunnel in the centre.

The problem isn't so much connecting between subway and York Region Transit local routes, but between Viva and YRT local routes, or what's left of them after the next service cut... er, "service adjustment."

New subway station names:

•Sephora West
•KFC Double Downsview Park
•Merrill Lynch West
•York Universal Studios
•Pioneer (as in the electronics company) Village
•Peugeot 407
•Vaughan Metro (as in the grocery store) Centre

Given that GO Transit has confirmed new stations, Kirby GO station (Barrie line) in Vaughan would obviously be named after whatever is the newest Kirby video game (and would be renamed every time a new Kirby video game is released).

Not when it comes to transfers between two surface transit routes. How about if Bathurst station had a bus to streetcar connection that required people to walk over 300 metres in an underground tunnel. This is the same thing we can also look forward to at Pioneer Village station, where someone decided it was a good idea to put the TTC and YRT buses in their own separate terminals. But at least they are just across the street from each other, rather than two blocks apart.

What about renaming Christie as Porn Theatre station in honor of the Metro theatre?

Shows how disjointed the region is. They make things difficult for the travelling public because they don't want people travelling from York Region to get onto the subway without paying a double fare. Most other places you would have one bus terminal with different buses service that one transit terminal. But here in Toronto, we always look for ways to make travelling difficult.

It reflects a mentality (history) driven by municipal boundaries. This makes sense for many municipal services; garbage for example. This 'service' is a significant exception. This thinking has to change. It's like the planner's brains end at the municipal boundary.

Not only difficult we spend the most money on overbuilding where it's not needed. Why build two terminals when we can accommodate with one? Same goes for Finch West station. A bus terminal is being built where a simple street stop would have been sufficient for the connection.

With this design TTC/YRT/GO users will not be able to easily switch buses to switch buses. Too bad we don't have a monorail to connect the two bus terminals. Then we would have a mini Pearson. :)

Are you actually complaining about the mid-road Viva stop? Wow--I was really happy with it, and I think the response has been pretty positive, so I'm rather surprised to see criticism of it. So, which of the following two alternatives is preferable to you, and why?

A) Don't have the mid-road Viva stops connect directly to VMC station, and have Viva reroute to the bus terminal instead. This results in a significant delay, easily at least 5 minutes, for anybody taking Viva through VMC, and a longer walk given the location of the bus terminal vs. the Viva stops on Hwy 7.

B) Have no bus terminal, and all buses serve the stops in the middle of Highway 7. This results, similarly, in a very significant delay to Viva service as their rapidway with 1 or 2 bus routes becomes shared by somewhere approaching a dozen different routes, and would add significant wait times to local YRT and regional Viva passengers alike while they wait for their bus to crawl through the long queue for the mid-road stops.
