Yet I always sensed an introverted quality to Ontario Place, albeit not completely. The pavilions have their open, glazed side, but they also present window-less sections. The water acts like an element of distance and separation. To get to know the interesting side of Ontario Place, you have to spend some time with it and make an effort (by going inside the complex).
 
That would seem to take Tory out of political commission for a while, if the redevelopment goes live in 2017 -- at the very least, he won't be able to run in the next mayoral election.

I dont think he is no longer interested in municipal politics (even though he may be caught in it, in whats going down..lol:D)
Anyways, by the sound of it.... they are shutting the whole park down except the Amphitheatre and Marina...Dont like what im hearing, total BS from the Liberals:mad:

Just watched the 'press conference' (if you can call it that) on CP24. John Tory wasn't there. For now they said the Amphitheatre, Atlantis and the Marina will be open, the rest closed. The two ministers were getter grilled by the media about the lack of details and Tory's absence. Anyway, let's see what happens, an announcement could come 3-4 months from now.
 
Sounds like they want to provide a carte blanche for redevelopment - which is ok, but need a lot more details on what is to be saved. And grilled, they should be.

The water park and amusement rides will be shut down as they require $20 million in upgrades. The Cinesphere, home of the IMAX theatre, will also be closed.

But Atlantis, the Molson Amphitheatre and the marina will remain open.

Well, I can understand the rationale behind closing Cinesphere - but I will be dead set against 1. demolition or 2. substantial change in use in any future proposal.

Most of Ontario Place on Toronto’s waterfront will be closed for years while the government reviews ways to revitalize the provincially-owned park.

Finance Minister Dwight Duncan says the cash-strapped government can’t afford to keep spending $20-million a year to keep Ontario Place open when attendance is steadily declining.

Mr. Duncan says the water park, amusement rides and the Cinesphere will be closed until 2017 while a panel looks at various ways to make Ontario Place a “must-visit” destination for tourists.

The only things to remain open will be the amphitheatre where concerts are held, the Atlantis pavilion and the marina.

Mr. Duncan says no decision has been made on whether or not to put a new casino at Ontario Place as part of the revitalization project.

Former Progressive Conservative Leader John Tory will lead the panel that will advise the government on redeveloping the entertainment park.

Ontario Place drew 2.5 million visitors when it opened in 1971, but attendance has declined in recent years.
 
The Star article said that a casino is a no go. I guess they didn't talk to Minister Duncan first :)
 
Actually I would be very surprised if it has been - considering that it will basically poach them off Rama and Niagara. Then again, those aren't Liberal seats...
