I guess I can't know for sure, but they really do have the appearance of slate.

They seem to be redoing the brick on the south side of the heritage house today.

It sure looks like it and i hope it is, but then again it could be "Dura Slate" made from recycled rubber

Yes, definitely slate. If you look at the surface you can see where pieces have spalled off along the cleavage plane.
The cuttings, are visible in the waste pile (buckets) as well..

Very nice surprise indeed. More time consuming to install, but well worth the extra cost and effort.
